The warmest July night temperatures ever....

Post by cyprusmax47 »

It is also what i realised and measured at my place in the Paphos hinterland, sea level 450 m, that the night temperatures since June are much higher than the the past years. (many times 30c all night) I don't mind day temperatures are high in a Cyprus summer, but at night i could not cope without air-con running and window closed. Thanks to my PV system and net-metering the July/Aug bill was only 25 Euro even with aircons running day and night....

Here yesterday's article in PaphosPress, google translated, if you open the link, there is translation at bottom left to click..

The warmest July in the climatic history of the island, with the sole exception of the mountainous areas, was July 2024 according to the measurements of the Meteorological Service. The Service even recorded a record number of nights with daily minimum temperatures at levels higher than the yellow danger level for extremely high minimum temperatures.

As reported by Meteorology, June 2024 may have written history as the warmest June ever recorded on our island (for the month of June) since there are climatological data on the island, however, July 2024 is also of particular interest as it records its own historical records in various temperature indices.

Although as a whole, with the exception of the mountainous regions, this year's July is ranked as the warmest July for the month of July, however, the parameter that has greatly contributed to this first place is not the average daily maximum temperature but the average daily minimum temperature! This means that July 2024 had too many warm nights.

This is also reflected in the July 2024 statistical tables of daily maximum and minimum temperatures at the main reference stations of the Meteorological Department. Some of the main conclusions drawn are:

For the reference station inside the island, the Athalassa station:

Regarding the station's daily maximum temperatures we note that in July 2024 a total of 16 days have been recorded where there was an EMMA warning in force for an extreme maximum temperature ranking the station 3rd after 2020 in which there were a total of 20 days with some warning EMMA in force after the years 2021 and 2023 (2nd place) with a total of 18 days. July 2024 also ranks 2nd for the most consecutive days with an EMMA warning in effect with a total of 10 consecutive days, behind 2023 which saw a total of 16 consecutive days with an EMMA warning in effect.

In relation to daily minimum temperatures we note that July 2024 ranks 1st with a total of 13 nights where there was an EMMA warning in effect for extreme minimum (high) temperature, followed by 1988 and 2000 with 10 nights , during which there was some EMMA warning in effect for extreme minimum (high) temperature and ranked 3rd in 2009 with 9 nights. In terms of the maximum number of consecutive nights with an EMMA extreme minimum (maximum) temperature warning in effect, 2009 ranks 1st with 9 such nights while July 2024 ranks 4th with 4 such nights.

For the reference station at Larnaca airport:

Worth mentioning are the minimum temperatures recorded at this station. During July 2024, a total of 14 nights were recorded at Larnaca airport during which there was an EMMA warning in force, followed by July 2023 with 10 such nights. In 3rd place are the Julys of 2022 and 2012 with 6 such nights. Number of consecutive nights with an EMMA warning in effect far less than that recorded during July this year and last year. July 2024 and 2023 appear to be in reverse order for the maximum number of consecutive nights with an EMMA warning in effect, with July 2023 taking the lead with 5 consecutive nights (the highest number of consecutive nights with an EMMA warning in effect for station operating period) and to be followed by July 2024 with 4 consecutive nights (4 consecutive nights with some EMMA warning in effect were also recorded during July 2007).

For the reference station at Paphos airport:

The minimum temperatures recorded at this station are also worth mentioning for Paphos airport. This year's July seems to hold the lead for Paphos airport both in terms of the total number of nights with an EMMA warning in force, with this number amounting to 14 consecutive nights, as well as in terms of the maximum number of consecutive nights with a warning EMMA in force with this number reaching 6 consecutive nights. They follow, in 2nd place, the Julys of the years 2023 and 2021 with a total of 7 nights with some EMMA warning in force and with 4 and 2, respectively, consecutive nights with an EMMA warning in force. We therefore note that in terms of the total number of nights with an EMMA warning in effect this has doubled in July 2024 compared to July 2023 records.
