Paphos Life

Paphos is blessed with many beaches, on both its southern and nothern coasts. In the second half of August, the locals down tools and embark on their own holidays. But where do they go? I guess some must join the tourists, and head for the likes of Coral Bay and Venus Beach. But lots more head to the North Coast, and travel past Latchi to the remoter beaches away from the tourists' gaze. Let's see what they get up to...

I love this bit of coastline.

The hidden coves between Baths of Aphrodite and the dog beach are gorgeous for snorkelling - I go right round the rock and along the coast. Heaven.

When I first went to Ttakkas beach many moons ago it was quiet with a few free sunbeds put down by the taverna. Now it gets really busy but I still enjoy it - I tend to go late and right at the end. Great for snorkelling too - on my last visit I saw 3 turtles. I often see turtles there, though never have anywhere else on that stretch of coast. The taverna is a lovely spot for a meal, though they only do lunch and close at around 5.

Thanks Dominic a beautiful part of the island use to visit the beach at Aphrodite Hotel decades ago long before they had sunbeds but over the years the owners have developed their business they used to have lovely fresh fish on their lunch menu

I’ve stayed for a long weekend in 2003 at The Anassa Hotel at that time they were very precious about their section of the beach

Great blog & always love visiting the area apart from this year when I arrived with a party of 50+ made up of bowls members & others
Have visited the Anassa & was impressed although a tad out of our budget but nice to know that the Island caters for all visitors pockets

Well, the Anassa was for a long time THE place in Cyprus to go for celebrities, specially from GB.

Sir Paul McCartney recently stayed at the hotel along with girlfriend Nancy Shevell and daughter Beatrice. Emma Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Simon LeBon and Prince Albert of Monaco are some of the other big names that have chosen to stay at this luxury resort. Rod Stewart was also seen celebrating the birthday of British billionaire Phillip Green.

I remember very well the huge 5 million 3 day party with 200 guests in 2002 when Philip Green celebrated his 50th birthday there.

I never went there for a night or a meal as my villa was just above at Neo Chorio, but what I remember, a short while after they opened, I tried to have a nice Whisky Bitter Lemon at their pool bar for a horrendous price then, when they intended to pour the Whisky and the Bitter Lemon in 2 plastic cups, which i refused to accept. They told me by law it was only allowed any drinks to serve in plastic cups at the pool area. So i left without a drink.

In August the North Coast of Paphos is very popular with the local Cypriot Population. Previously empty coves become awash with gazebos and boats. The smell of bbqs is in the air, and everybody has a good time. If you are on holiday here you will likely stick to the more tourist-suited beaches like Latsi and Polis Municipal. Alternatively there are Coral Bay, Corallia Beach, Venus, SODAP and Geroskipou Beaches on the South Coast, to name but a few. But if you are curious, this film shows you where the locals go, and how they relax.

Most of these Cypriot holidaymakers are not from the Paphos district, but mainly from Nicosia area and the other districts. Also Turkish Cypriots who lived before in that area, which you can recognize on their different car registration number.

It would be really great if one day the Paphos to Polis motorway is finished, avoiding all this traffic passing through Paphos ...

Plenty visit from Paphos too. You only need to see how crowded the B7 gets between Lidl and the Basket Roundabout on the weekend after the bank holiday. Those cars won't have come from the motorway.

The owners of the seafront restaurants in Latchi look forward to the weekends and public holidays and often comment on the influx of residents from Nicosia.

Unfortunately Polis Campsite is closed as that was very popular but people still go to the beach.

So many quiet and secluded areas along this coastline - let's hope it remains that way.
