You have all read the hype, but like us (after retiring & living on the island since 2012), is the evertyday reality now more of a nightmare existance whilst waiting for God?

We plaguarised this narrative which seems to encapsulate are current feelings;

This is island fever!

While Cyprus is a paradise for visitors, those of us who actually live here are highly susceptible to Island Fever

“If I don’t leave Cyprus at least once a year, I go insane! Even paradise palls after a while.”

Sometimes known as ‘rock fever’, the term was coined in Hawai’i and used to describe the feeling of restlessness, isolation and boredom experienced by those cut off from the mainland. But it can apply to any island in the world: anywhere that’s cut off from the mainland, and relatively small in both area and population.

The UK, Australia and Japan, for instance, don’t meet these criteria. But smaller islands such as Cyprus definitely qualify, especially when you factor in other recognised causes, such as higher cost of living (most islands have to import goods, leading to higher prices), the expense of leaving (usually by plane), and the generally slower pace of life.

So how do you determine if you have island fever? What makes someone susceptible to this unique sense of confinement and unease?

Couldn't agree more Dominic. Do people on the Isle of Man have this problem, or Jersey, Guernsey etc? Of course not. I have been here for 18 years, not been to the UK for 5, and couldn't be happier.

There will always be the whingers. I just wish they would go back to the UK.

If you are sitting around waiting for God I guess you wont be happy wherever you are. I agree with Dominic what a load of rubbish.

Each to their own, of course. We haven't been off the island for several years and have no plans to do so. We have all we want or need here in Cyprus. We would be struggling on our pensions if we still lived in the UK even though we both had good jobs and have decent pensions. We weren't unhappy here during the Pandemic. It was lovely to have Paphos to ourselves! Maybe if we were in our 30's or 40's Cyprus could seem rather insular but for us now it's lovely.

Hold hands with your supporters, most are probably in public denial of making the move too.

I'm not sure how long the honeymoon period should last. Mine has got to 18 years now.

I'm very happy here and don't believe I will ever move back to the UK. I know many people who feel the same way, and I'm up for holding hands with the more attractive ones.

Not at all. Many people choose to go back to the UK. And fair play to them if that is what they decide. It is entirely up to them. Better to do that than stay here and just whinge about their lot. But ask yourself this. If you leave one place for another place because you think it will make your life better, and it doesn't, then perhaps the issue isn't one of geography.

Cyprus is infinitely better than living in the UK.I'm staying in UK at present and am shocked with what is going on here. You may have heard about the riots in many cities mainly in Midlands and NW Britain. A new Govt doesn't' seem to be able to exercise control.
The new Govt is also introducing swingeing new taxes,

Anyone with rosy dreams of retuning here to live, better watch the situation here.

Its awful, hate to see what's happening. Looking forward to returning to a much safer and peaceful island...

You're quite right, I'm lucky that I live in a quiet area of the country, so far we are untouched by the terror on the streets. The riots here in the UK are terrible, but sadly, it was only a matter of time.

You can't keep on absorbing thousands of illegal immigrants, give them preferential treatment, then sit back and expect nothing to happen. Our veterans sleeping rough on the streets, immigrants in the Holiday Inn! I'm sorry for our police, and anyone else who's innocent, caught up in this mayhem. I thank God for my country, I blame the politicians for the mess we're in now.

Would I go back to Cyprus? If I was fit and younger, probably yes, but now it's too late for me. I tell my children, leave the UK, there is nothing here for you, or my grandchildren, and I fear for my great grandchildren, I truly do.

Enjoy Cyprus, it's a wonderful country.
