Let's spare a thought for all the armed forces who gave their lives on this day 80 years ago,and indeed all past and present conflicts ,lovely to see the remaining veterans on TV,we owe them all such a lot,

Indeed we do Lotus, we wouldn't be here without them.

We take our freedom for granted, but it has cost many lives to give us that freedom.

The coverage on BBC1 was excellent.
It was well presented and very moving at times.

Well worth a viewing in catch-up.

I have had it on all day, but not just sat watching it

Eternity is not long enough to commit sufficient remembrance and gratitude to such ordinary people who did extraordinary acts of patriotism in defence of freedom and love. Many gave everything with their life, many returned altered in mind and memory. Remembrance is sacred.

I grew up near Aldershot. One of the pioneer military plastic surgeons worked there, in the midsts of time. It was amazing what reconstruction work he performed, but also tragic the number of patients who committed suicide later. In those days ordinary people were not as accommodating with deformities as they are in these enlightened times.

I am always filled with despair when countries resort to sending their fittest and ablest to death instead of thrashing out a better solution without the use of force. So much shit in this world could have been avoided if countries had treated each other with more respect before things got out of hand.

With WW11, it only took one man to start it off.

And still today, one man causes so much death and injury, look at Russia.

It's never as clear cut as that though. I could be wrong but I thought that one of the reasons Hitler was able to sweep to power was because Germans were fed up their economic lot since the Great Depression and the war reparations from WW1. What caused WW1? Well that's beyond my pay grade.

And Russia? Is Ukraine's proposed entry into NATO really that different from the Russians bringing missiles to Cuba, back in the day? What did the West think would happen?

I'm not saying Russia are right, but the West certainly isn't blameless.

Looks like the Russians may be taking missiles back to Cuba - They have a Nuclear Sub docking there any day now

Interestingly, it appears that the French were stopping British paratroopers, (who were in uniform, carrying heavy kit), and asking for passports and ID.

They weren't that damn fussy on D Day!

I have always found that the French will do their very best to inconvenience the English - There was a video yesterday of the French police standing on the beach watching a migrant boat get off safely across the channel - They come second place only to the Welsh who are also big fans of the English - I have lost count of the times over the years that i have walked into a Welsh bar where all are speaking English and as soon as they hear you speak they switch their language from English to their native tongue We must have offended them somewhere along the line.

The French didn't stop the invading German troops, and ask for passports. They don't like us, the feeling is reciprocated as far as I'm concerned.

As as far as the Welsh go, I think that Edward 1 had a lot to answer for, but then they forced Henry Tudor on us, so we're quits, or should be. Maybe any Welsh born members of PL, could enlighten us.

From praising the Brave men who took part in D day, to little Farage supporters moaning about the French and Welsh, don't you just love Forums,

Well if the French Hadn't asked to see paratroopers passports at the D-Day Memorial then maybe it would not have been included in the thread - They deserve to be moaned about - And as for Farage supporters where did you get that from ? - And i am far from Little

Im sure the majority of members including myself, hold those brave men and women in the highest esteem, with out the need to post it on a forum,

Now you presume to speak on behalf of "the majority of members". You presume too much.

We do have the right to post our praise, of those brave men who fought and died for our freedom, on this forum, without consulting you, no matter what you think. You do their memory no service, by griping at me.

Maybe you could address 71 Trans Am's post also?
