Traffic police will be out in force across Cyprus this week as the department kicks-off its fourth anti-speeding clampdown this year.
“We are giving particular emphasis on speeding as it the main cause of fatal traffic accidents and that is why we have organised, this our fourth campaign this year,” said Traffic Police Chief Philippos Papaelias told state radio on Monday morning.
“Some motorists in Cyprus need to change their driving attitude and should not only drive carefully when the Traffic Department announces ant-speeding campaigns,” said Papaelias.
Police will be patrolling along all the island’s roads but specific emphasis will be given to known ‘hot spots’ where drivers tend to speed.
“Our aim is not to charge drivers but to reduce the number of fatal speed-related traffic accidents,” said Papaelias pointing out the unofficial +20Km/h leeway police officers allow drivers.
“Speed limits to a particular road are not there by chance but depend on a lot of factors regarding the physical condition of the road and subsequently to the overall safety of road users,” explained Papaelias.
Touching on the correct use of the three lane highway at the entrance of Nicosia, Papaelias pointed out that drivers should keep left and pass on the right at all times.
“The only time the right-hand lane should be used, is when both the left and middle lanes are full and a driver wants to overtake but even then, once he has overtaken, drivers should when possible move back into the middle or left lanes,” explained Papaelias stressing the importance of the continuous use of indicators.
“Drivers need to drive defensively in order to prevent traffic accidents,” stressed Papaelias
