They did not tell how much it will cost though... this would also mean that you cannot recognize the age of a car on the road from a number plate anymore..

( AAR... = 1988)

Given that our numberplates are normally covered in mud it would be a waste of time for me.

Surely the personalised number plate will still display the month and year of manufacture?
Still, another example of the depressing "Look at me, Look at me" culture that's so prevalent, particularly in the UK and SU.

Can't help but think this has been available for some time to those in the know. A few years ago in Paphos I saw a nice BMW convertible with the reg. KYR101. In Greek "MEN", very macho!

Be nice if the govt.and municipalities, would channel the extra effort in to issuing title deeds.
or dealing with animal cruelty, or having a crematorium or anything that would actually make a difference!

In 1989- I used to drive a Nissan Patrol HRoof and my number plate was AMR-123 (Albert Max R...) which was a present from the car dealer in Nicosia (car was expensive enough with 140% tax) which thought this is very important for me (he did not know that I was a citrus grower then)
By the way in Switzerland you can keep your OWN number plate all your live if you want and in Austria every car owner has got his "private" number plate so it is not so special but an extra money coming into the pockets of the Authorities. I wonder if they allow the Chinese or Indian what THEY want.

In the 90s I used to cycle to work in London. I once stopped in traffic next to a posh convertible with a number plate something like "A1LOVER". I asked the guy how much it cost. He said "far too much".

Absolutely right. There is a black Porsche 911 in Paphos that has 911 as it's three numbers. Of course it could be coincidence but I suspect not.

Perhaps you print out the article and keep it with you when you come back with your car. As the law is quite new it will take some time until all the Authorities are aware of it.
""Private number plates will also be transferable from vehicle to vehicle subject to approval from the Road Transport Department."" Perhaps you ask a lawyer to help you with that. (ask for the costs beforehand)

The CAA in the UK allows personalised aircraft registrations, with a few limitations. I believe G-SEXY and others of a similar nature were disallowed. Don't believe it costs any extra either.
But if governments can derive extra income from vanity registrations, why not?
G-SEXY was an AA1 Lloyd.
G-AIDS is a DH82, G-PUSI a Cessna Crusader belonged to a well known Jockey.
