Paphos Life

This is a bit of a big ask really but if anyone can manage it i would most appreciate it.
The Paphos Classic Vehicle Club annual show is on this Sunday 11th June between 09.00am and 01.00pm at the harbour fort display area. If anyone is in the area and can take a few pics or maybe even a video clip of what is on display and post it that would be great. We have only managed to catch it once and we are just going to miss it again by two weeks, It would be good to know what is still around in the area, Thanks in advance if anyone can do this.

Great shots, CG, and thanks for sharing! Wot, no motorcycles???

My favourite HAS to be the old Bedford village bus. I wonder if any of these old gals are still in regular use in Cyprus? The chassis-cab for this would have been built at the Bedford Trucks factory in Dunstable (not 5 miles away from me) in the 60's. It's eminently possible that, as a Vauxhall Service Dept apprentice 'doing the rounds' of all the assembly areas of Vauxhall in Luton and Bedford in Dunstable at that time, that I might have helped put this darling together, LOL!

I guess a coach builder in Nicosia or Limassol would have added the charming bus body? Anyone have any history on this particular aspect pls?

I must confess... I wandered around taking pictures of the cars with the intention of returning for the motorcycles and scooters.

Unfortunately, I got waylaid by an ice cream...

There were some beautiful bike there - I think a Matchless took first prize...

We spent too long having lunch and by the time we turned up they had all gone!

Thanks, Aquila! I'm a bit mystified with the bike in photo #2 of your first series of shots. It's a flat twin cylinder, for sure. I suspect a 350cc Douglas Dragonfly of mid-50s vintage, but from the angle taken (and res), I can't quite make out the front fork arrangement, nor what it says on the description label.

ps: since we're talking classic motorbikes here, I thought a trip down memory lane would be permissable... Here's yours truly giving all he's got on his Thruxton Norvil 750cc Commando production racer around Coram Curve, Snetterton, back in spring 1973...

East Germany made some fantastic leading-technology motor bikes back in the 50s and 60s, both for the road and the track. DKW and MZ were others I can think of. But the poor sods were all strapped to the Communist regime at the the time, which dictated that NONE of the satellite countries could be self-sufficient in vehicle production, they ALL had to rely on mother Russia to supply one vital component...

Which was the ball bearings! Guess which component FAILED most regularly in these cars and bikes? Yep, you got it in one! But in those days (under Communism), you weren't allowed to complain! As to do so was treated as high treason against the State!

Gladly, things are different these days, with the likes of Skoda (previously the butt of many jokes) churning out thousands of very high quality cars each year, under VW input and investment, for example...

Can I just ask, is this the classic motor show that's been held early/mid May over the last few years, usually preceded by a Greek dancing show by kids from the local schools? We were disappointed to miss it this year

Thanks for the pics CG - Its amazing what is tucked away on that island, I know from my wandering around that there are several off the road vehicles under buildings and in bushes at various locations and many are in very good condition due to the weather I am also amazed that the local car dealers who ship newer vehicles in to cyprus are not taking some of the old cars back to the UK - The humble MK1 Ford Escort in good condition is now selling in the UK for between £11,000 and £14,000 if you can find one and they cost nowhere near that new - If you only knew this was going to happen. Thanks Again CG great pictures I am pleased you took them before you spotted the ice cream.

They had to move it because the harbour was booked up with events for the year of culture during May.

Thanks CG. In that case hopefully we'll catch it next year. It's something we always enjoy and look forward to. Thought we might have got our dates wrong this time
