Cyprus’ National Health System changes to come in effect as of September

The Health Insurance Organisation – the agency running the island’s National Health System (Gesy) – will introduce important changes as of September.
The inclusion of Accident and Emergency Departments of private hospitals all across Cyprus in the Gesy is probably the most important, Philenews reports.
Then follows a planned change in the opening hours of on-call clinics while new hospitals will also be included in the system which still appears to have teething problems.
Gesy was introduced in 2019 in a bid to ensure that Cyprus’ medical and pharmaceutical expenses remain affordable for everyone.
Also in September, the way in which hospitals in the system are generally reimbursed will change and the quality criteria will be implemented.
That is, from September onwards, quality criteria will begin to be taken into account when calculating the remuneration of personal doctors.
At the same time, HIA’s Andreas Papaconstantinou told Philenews the first A&E Department of a private hospital to join Gesy is Limassol’s ‘Ygia’ on September 25.
As far as Nicosia goes, ‘Apollonia’ hospital will be somewhat delayed in joining the Gesy due to the works currently being carried out there.
The date has been postponed from mid-September to October 1.
