From prehistory to today, Larnaca has had a chequered history. Kiteon had two ports a thousand years BCE and was a great commercial centre. Its famous son was Zeno, the founder of Stoic philosophy. About his time, what is now the salt lakes were formed from a commercial estuary. In the early Christian era, Paul and Barnabas visited the area and consecrated the risen Lazarus as the first bishop of Kition. Mohammed's wet nurse, Umm Haram, died near the largest salt lake and an 18th c. Tekke was built over her tomb, making it an important Muslim site. The 16th c. Ottoman invasion was tempered by malaria epidemics in Larnaca. Today, the city is a maze of narrow streets and a wide boulevard along the sea front.

Larnaca has a diverse history, from ancient ports to its association with Zeno and Stoic philosophy. It's also connected to important figures like Paul and Barnabas. Today, it's a lively city with narrow streets and a beautiful seafront boulevard.
