Having been designated as the Paphos Life curmudgeon, it inspired me to find out more about the word. The Oxford dictionary tells me that it is a late 16th century term of unknown origin. It is defined as:
In order to fit in with the description, I should cry out loud from the rooftops, "Bah, Humbug!". However, As It Is the Season of Goodwill to all men (and women), I'll just say meekly Joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the members of this forum!

I don't doubt that I am gruff, irritable, cantankerous and elderly, so the word fits me perfectly.Orig., a mean-spirited or miserly person. Now usu., a gruff, irritable, or cantankerous (esp. elderly) man.
