Hiking is becoming increasingly popular, but some badly marked paths can make those jaunts stressful While Cyprus boasts some stunning nature spots, many hiking routes meant to highlight their beauty lack clear signposts or point in misleading directions. The problem is exemplified in cases where people get lost, as was...

I have recently been exploring a nature trail that has been forgotten about. It is a crying shame too, as it is a lovely walk. I can approach it from either end, but the central part of the trail is completely overgrown. You wouldn't know from the start of the trail though.

Once I have finished exploring it and clearing a path through, I will do a blog or two about it.

I always use the Wikiloc app. It has hundreds of trails all over the island which can be filtered by length, difficulty, ascent, etc. I think it costs a few euros a year. I have to agree that the nature trails signage can be confusing and trails are often badly kept, especially as regards scree.

I've been exploring Paphos Forest recently and it's a wonder! I saw my first moufflon last week - for about half a second.

Try following the E4 footpath from Paphos to Tsada. Very few signs, there is one at the beginning, at the end of the old airport road, but anyone getting off a plane would have great difficulty finding it. The first part follows follows the coast, and then makes a right turn up the Ezouza valley, which is not signposted. The whole path needs signposting. The bit above Episkopi past the ruined church and then left, was really overgrown when I tried to cycle it last spring. On previous occasions I have crossed the small stream and made my way to Kallepia, going past the abandoned bus stop.

Hiking and trail or trek cycling could play a very important part in Cyprus tourism.

You're right Yioula, Cyprus has some beautiful, scenic and at times remote countryside.
But it needs a bit of work first to upgrade and improve walking trails. As well as continual maintenance to keep paths open and safe. I-have also tried to follow the E4 trail mentioned by Anarita John. As he says, it would be very hard to follow as it really needs signposting properly every time there is a choice of paths to be taken. Otherwise walkers are likely to get lost. Perhaps there should be one Govt Dept with responsibility for foot paths?

But its not so long since the days when many rural roads to and between villages had no signposts, and yes, we did get lost at times. Always carried a local map, but they weren't very accurate either!
Now at least almost all roads are sign posted!
