Pickup Truck

Hi Guys
Need a clarification , yesterday I took my Double Cab Pickup for an MOT , it’s fitted with the back Carryboy cover .
The people said this vehicle is registered as a pickup , but with the Carryboy fitted , it must be registered as a Van ????
The back section is removable , so I am a bit lost , as if I change to van then remove it for Summer , I will again be illegal
Anyone else had this
Les

Got a feeling what they told you is correct,

This rule came in about 10 years ago, pickups are classed as agricultural/work vehicles and have low tax compered to cars and vans of a similar engine capacity.
The government were losing revenue to people who bought these vehicles for anything other than work and a lot put these fiberglass roofs on them for obvious reasons.

hi Guys
Thanks for the response , however we have the back Carryboy on and off the truck , so how do I register it .
Very confusing , as we use it as a work vehicle
Thanks

I expect that you would need to go to the road transport department or a citizens centre

I suppose lots of drivers have things altered for the MOT. Hardtops over the pickup back are one and of course just mentioned 'Bull Bars'
There are also many many trucks with wheels stuck out wider than the body of the pickup. I assume they have the 'spacers' removed before they go in for an MOT..
But in all these cases I don't know how good the insurance would be if you need to make a claim.

Your safest bet is to register it as a van, then your covered legally when you have the top on.

If it is any help my garage removes the bull bars before my car goes for its MOT and then refits them when it comes back from its MOT .
Terry
God forbid you run someone down with those bull bars, your insurance will be as worthless as a chocolate tea pot.

Thank you for your concerns regarding my bull bars , both my garage and myself do not regard these as bull bars and neither does my insurance company but for whatever reason the MOT centre I use do and even advised me to remove them before testing so try and make sense of that !
Terry
They won't pass an MOT, there's your answer.

I think basically an MOT pass is based on presenting a vehicle in its original form. ie without any 'mods'.

In the U.K. we would call it a sump guard but the MOT regulations in Cyprus do not appear to know the difference between a bull bar and a sump guard
Terry
It doesn't matter what you would call it in the UK, you are living in Cyprus, and Cyprus laws are what apply here, not UK laws, American laws or any other laws. I repeat making alterations to cars , that are illegal could nullify any insurance claim. The fact that you remove it to pass the mot , tells you everything you need to know

Can I make it quite clear the car has never been altered the sump guard was fitted by the manufacturers and I have a sales brochure which confirms it. The brochure even mentions it is a sump guard .
Terry
I understand what you are saying, but the fact that you have to remove it to pass a Cyprus MOT, says it is illegal over here, whether it was on the car when manufactured or not.
