I've been tweaking a few forum permission settings tonight.
The only major change is that guests will no longer see images.
So if you get a funny message, log in.

What does it matter if you leave it on 24/7? Ah you save electricity

I never log out. Apart from that you have the option of not showing you are browsing the forum.

I also never log out.
All posts can still be read, as Dominic has said:-
The only major change is that guests will no longer see images.
If you want/need to see an image...........just login.

If anybody is curious (I thought somebody asked why but I can't see that post now) it is basically an experiment, to see if it gets more people registering. Given that the site is getting more exposure these days, it would be useful to transfer guest visits into full-time members.
The long term future of the site will rely on revenue from the ad banner and the directory (when that is properly implemented; these things take a bit of time). The google ads will eventually be phased out, leaving us at the mercy of our advertisers / sponsors.
I can demonstrate very healthy page visit stats but the one stat we are a bit low on, compared to the competition, is membership. Given the age of the site, this is entirely understandable. Plus there is a big difference between membership and ACTIVE membership. However, I will certainly feel more content when membership is in four figures rather than three. So I am trying this as an experiment, to see if it encourages our new guests to register.

My settings keep me logged in to the forums I visit. It's much easier than having to login each time I've closed down my phone or laptop.
I know that some forums also don't allow guest users to click through links in forum posts without being logged in as a member. Will that also apply here now the settings have been changed Dominic?

I prefer to log on/off each time I use a site and I have a different password for each one.

There's nothing wrong with logging out. When we had relatives visiting they stayed at a hotel in Paphos. Each time we visited the hotel, I used the free computer. It was ALWAYS logged in to somebody's facebook account when I used it. If you are bored, you could of course make some facebook posts using their id. Imagine what trouble you could cause...

Well that's when you really do have to be sensible, if using a public computer. Obviously some folks weren't being careful enough!
I never leave my email logged in at all mainly because I don't want Google snooping at everything I do. I don't, or very rarely access my emails outside of the home and it's extremely rare I would use a public computer nowadays.
The last time I did that was when we were on holiday from Cyprus in Egypt in 2010. WiFi was extremely difficult to get hold of and each room was allocated 15 minutes free usage of a desktop pc in the reception area of the hotel we were staying at. On that occasion, I did check my emails just in case our Egyptair flights got changed as we were travelling independently from a group or tour operator.

A tad frustrating as I don't normally log in unless I wish to post...and I'm sure many others don't either.
You will be happy to know then, that I have finished my experiment. Statistically there was no difference. If anything, there was an increase in spam, though I think that was just a coincidence. So, given that it had no effect, and that it annoyed at least one (possibly two!) people, I have put it back to the old setting.
I think I have anyway. If guests can't see images still, log in and tell me!
