Around Russian Road and Kato Paphos

In this film we begin at the top end of Russian Road in Paphos. I don't know it's official name, but it has always been called that for as long as I can remember. Actually, I just checked, and it's official name is Agapinoros. This translates as Beloved. Russian Road it is, then.

From there, we head into Kato Paphos, and have a drive through the quieter streets, before arriving at the coast road by the Almyra Hotel. It is interesting to see how the grubbier parts of Bar Street are being turned into car parks. This is a definite improvement.

For a change, we then drive to the harbour via the road that goes behind the Sea Front. This was partly because we don't normally go this way, and partly because the Sea Front was closed to traffic.

I always enjoy watching your videos, and I'm doing that even more now to help me get prepared to learn to drive on the left when my partner and I come to Cyprus in mid-October. He's always done the driving when we visit but it's high time I face my fears. I think your smooth driving and lovely tours accompanied by pleasant music will set the proper tone for me. Thank you Dominic.

I think it was Saturday morning. They had closed the Harbour to traffic, and they don't do that during the week.

I think there are (or were) lots of Russian shops on it. There is another road called Butcher Boy Road that runs right through the middle of Paphos. It is called that because of the name of a Butcher's on the road, and a big sign outside it. The shop moved to a different location some time ago, but it is still called Butcher Boy Road.

I think it was also referred to sometimes as Mr Chicken Road as there was a takeaway just up from the lights called Mr Chicken. Its gone now.

It was first known as Mr. Chicken road, after that it became known as Russian road, not because of many Russian shops, but because of the many Russian speaking people living there, then the Russian shops came.

I would agree with that explanation.

That's what I was always told, many years ago.
