Hi Max,
So what are the crowds of people doing, they just look to be standing around in groups? Is there something special about a 'Panayiri Night ' We just went to the harbour in daylight and looked at the stalls there.

Most look like they are walking to me, not standing

Historically Larnaca, has always been the main town for the kataklismos festivities, we avoid the weekends because thousands of people attend from all over Cyprus, fantastic buzz around, but a bit hard finding a bar or restaurant seat, we will visit during the week to watch some of the free concerts, and have some tasty Loukoumades .

So am I right thinking it has no religious significance, unless its more Old Testament? It seems to me that Cyprus tends to have extremes. Either too much rain or not enough! Now a days thanks to all the reservoirs Cyprus has the ability to store much more rain water, fortunately!

“ Fifty days after Easter comes "Kataklysmos" - the Day of the Holy Ghost. In Cyprus it is celebrated by fairs held on the water fronts. This celebration is said to have descended to us from the feasts in honour of Aphrodite which were also held on the water fronts. To this day people go to pay homage to the "holy water fronts" , where water sports are held and people go around in boats and even splash each other just for the fun of it.”
