Obscene

In my opinion, the jackpot prize of £ a hundred and 84 million cries out loud against my Scottish Presbyterian upbringing. There may be a case, although the Chancellor will not agree, to limit the size of such prizes to something manageable. As an extreme example of the misery often caused by large windfalls, look at the Boris Becker case, landing him in clink. Less obvious is the misery rife in the sporting world, but it is there. The "winners" of windfalls often result in broken marriages and they are the real "losers", not the man in the street betting a fiver every now and then. Of course, the real cause is sheer greed and, going back to my upbringing, I remember well that, "the love of money is the root of all evil".

What do you think?

Most would say that instead of one person winning 184 million it would be better if 184 poeple won one million or even 368 people winning half a million. But the lotteries research tells them that having just one big one sells more tickets. Can you blame them.

I don't see anything obscene in winning a massive wedge, you can give alot away to good causes if you wish, don't forget these people will use it to buy properties for themselves and possibly their family's, and then buy luxury goods etc, meaning the money goes back to keep people in work etc...

Perhaps there is nothing obscene in winning a massive wedge, it is the massive wedge itself that is obscene. I would certainly not guarantee that winners would spend the money wisely or productively. Okay, it is a momentary reaction but, in the present case, the winners have talked about using their windfall (presumably a small part thereof) for a holiday trip to Hawaii and Texas. But, this may be indicative of the moment's situation – how would I react? I don't know but I hope not hedonistically.

As with most people, I am against such big payouts.

Unless it's to me of course.

I'd love a big payout. Primarily for me, but also to be in the wonderful position of giving lots of people life changing sums of money. A bit like a real life Father Christmas.

It's all part of the fun. Nothing obscene about it. Just the luck of the draw.

Personally I've won thousands on the lottery since it started, simply by not buying a ticket and saving the money to something I actually want. It would be rather mean-spirited of me to begrudge people who do play it the extra thrill of a whopping payout.

Unfortunately it brings people great unhappiness as they aren’t able to cope with such wins and end up divorced

My main concern would be having a child /grandchild kidnapped.

They covered this in the interview in the press, basically because they knew that if they’d tried to keep it secret, they knew someone would go public and out them so might as well be in control of the story for as long as possible.

Good luck to them, it’s called a lottery for a reason.

Good luck to them too! I think it would be almost impossible to keep such wealth a secret as if your lifestyle goes to the next level then people will question it anyway.

What irks me more is the people that say “it won’t change my life if I wind the jackpot”. Well don’t bloody do the lottery then and it’ll gives others that want to win life changing money a better chance.

Sure people will realize you have come into money, but it could be a couple of million, no one will guess you have won 184 million, big difference.

I believe that if the lottery prize was shared equally between a fixed number of people then it would attract even more interest to buy tickets as there is more chance to be a winner than going for one big prize.

I too would have to think long and hard about all the begging letters after a £184m win………

and that I should probably stop sending them.
