Sadly it seems a Cypriot habit to just throw things out of a car window. From cigarette butts, to drinks cans, and even little bags of rubbish when they have tidied up the car.

I don't think the truckloads of fly-tipped waste I see when out hiking, including white goods and entire kitchens or bathrooms, were left there by modish urbanites. The same is true of shotgun shells and fishing bait containers.

Cyprus has a real problem with littering and fly-tipping and I don't see how people can hand-wave it away. Yes, it happens everywhere, but it's worse in Cyprus than in any developed country I've been to.

Fortunately, there are lots of selfless people dedicated to cleaning up other people's mess. Save your Hood and Let's Make Cyprus Green are two groups that do good work.

Yes, I read about this case involving a youngish man of 27 in todays newspaper. Apparently
he threw a lit cigarette butt out of the car window not far from a National forest area, which caused a fire, which burnt about 10 hectares of countryside close to the forest.Last year there were 100's of such fires. Last year we had the Russian helicopters to fire fight.
This year Cyprus has not. Lighting such fires is against the law.
Surely, the judges discision to sentence the man to two years in prison will set an example of what sentences can be given to any other similar cases of unlawful or careless behaviour like this? Incidentally, the report I saw said that the max sentence is 10 years and a fine of€50,000.
So it seems that he got a away with a fairly light sentence this time.
