Covid - "Re-infections are very common": They get sick again in just two weeks

A large number of re-infections are recorded by the Tracking Unit every week, a number that last week reached up to 1,500 infections for the second or even third time. Of particular interest, however, is the fact that re-infection can occur in a very short time.
Speaking to AlphaNewsLive, the head of the unit, Valentinos Silvestros, says that re-infections are very common, with some of them being within a month or even two weeks of the first diagnosis. In most cases of re-infections, it is after six months, however it is possible to be observed in just two weeks.
Asked if it was another strain of the virus, he said it could not be cross-checked as the percentage of samples sent for analysis, which also includes re-infections, is very small. Usually though
"We know from international libraries that those who have had Delta or Omicron are usually re-infected and there are some reports that Omicron re-infections occur."
Regarding the symptoms that occur in the re-infection, he said that it seems to be milder, however it also plays a role if there are underlying diseases.
Transmission chains seem to exist in schools, nursing homes, children's birthday parties, the Macheiras Monastery and workplaces. The Tracking Unit has been focusing on the cases of 20-35 year olds for the last few days and the virus has been spread in workplaces and camps.

I'm in the UK at present. One thing that strikes me is( that unlike in Cyprus), now that all restrictions have been relaxed here, is how few people are bothering to wear masks. Those who do use them are mainly older people...
On busses few people bother, or in crowded supermarkets or department stores.. its little wonder that the virus is spreading and even increasing.. I am wearing mine, usually an FFP 2. anywhere that is busy.

We're in Benidorm right now.
Masks to be worn on public transport and entering bars, pubs, hotels, shops and in crowded outdoor places if unable to distance at 1.5m
At home, masks are still requested to be worn on public transport but not obligatory.
Our local working men's club still want masks when entering and until seated for drinks.

Given that you finish by stating that the mask-wearing theatre should come to an end, why do you start saying that it is bad news that TUI are doing away with the mask requirement? You are contradicting yourself.

Covid has not gone away and is on the rise in the UK.
Because it's not reported these days doesn't mean it's not around us.
Just spent another four weeks laid up with Covid like symptoms and believe me it wasn't like a mild dose of Flu as some keep suggesting, caught it from one of my granddaughters who brought it in from school.
Here's a link about Covid, read the notice on the left hand side and it shows the rise in Covid cases.

Because as we all know, once away from the high street and in our daily interaction with others, no-one wears a mask.
Many people in my area are not only wearing face masks but are still cautious about social distancing, even when walking past on the pavements.

It’s all about distancing. If I go to Debenhams or any other clothes shop, I am likely to stand in the same place for a good while browsing so am more likely to be close to someone for a longer period of time. If I go to Alfa Mega, I don’t tend to browse over which product I might buy. It’s in the trolley and move on. The counters and till queues tend to move quickly too.
I believe that’s part of the rationale.

This is what learning to live with Covid is all about. There will still be infections and even deaths. Some people (usually the vulnerable) will want measures to continue while others (typically the young) will want all measures to end immediately. Others, like me, are happy to see measures gradually ramping down while also staying prepared for the next flare-up. I think the measures in Cyprus are broadly right but some make little sense. For example, I can't see that the SafePass does anything at all to prevent the spread and the costs of the Test to Stay programme don't seem proportionate to the potential benefits.
I suspect the people constantly getting reinfected are younger and more socially active. They aren't likely to be the ones who suffer badly from Covid, and yet it's unreasonable to ask them to put their lives on hold for further years when there is little threat to them. In future, the vulnerable will probably have to work out their own level of acceptable risk and take their own precautions.

Worth noting that in Cyprus - around 25% of deaths due to COVID-19 were recorded in the last 2½ months.
Whilst other numbers look to be improving the death rate is not.

Is that 25% died of Covid or died with Covid, Steve?

According to the Health Ministry:
902 total reported daily covid deaths
229 total daily covid deaths so far in 2022
Deaths relate to where Covid-19 is the final cause of death and may be updated in
the fortnightly national risk report.

But even the Cyprus government acknowledged yesterday that the ones dying were either elderly, not vaccinated (or whose vac status was waning), or who had underlying health conditions.
I am not sure how that is different to the profile of previous covid deaths.
Happy in Cyprus wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 2:53 amWe can't keep changing parameters to suit the mandates. The stated rationale previously was that the government didn't want hospitals being overwhelmed. Which at 107 cases and dropping (from a recent high of 250) they're not.
I would imagine that in addition to not wanting hospitals to be overwhelmed they also didn't want a high number of deaths.
Like I say other numbers are improving which is obviously a positive, but with the current number of deaths I can't see
any further relaxations happening yet.
Happy in Cyprus wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 2:50 amA few months ago I predicted that the epediomologists and 'experts' who advise government in Cyprus would not willingly relinquish the celebrity status and limelight they have enjoyed for the past two years and my belief remains unchanged.
Perhaps they just want to give the best advice based on the data, their experience & knowledge?
Whether we agree or not with all their advice, the restrictions etc overall Cyprus has so far recorded one of the lowest
rates of coronavirus deaths among its population in the EU.
Cheers

Classified as a vulnerable person I look forward to a relaxation in the rules... but not until people act responsibly and this just isn't happening.
In the above example I try to maintain a minimum distance when in public places, but can only keep out of other people's way if they do likewise when in congested areas - all about give and take. Hence a supermarket trolley is not just for transporting food but also acts as a barrier, especially at the cashier area.
