As the German TV is as usual very poor today, I was looking for something different and found this interesting video with English text how the Bernina Railway in Switzerland was coping in the 1950s and now with the enormous amounts of snow in Winter. Also very nice panoramic images from this area where I lived many years back for a short period of time. I hope some members on here will enjoy it too....

Wow, that is a fascinating film. Respect for those hard working people.

Louise is right, what a fascinating film! But it is mainly an engineering, rather than a general interest film. I was hoping to see the onward journey to St Moritz, but that wasn't shown.
Max, I would love to see another film which shows that. Wonder if you know of one?

Thanks
Dee

This video shows the tour from St.Moritz over the Bernina Pass in Autumn. Not to forget to adjust the quality to at least 720p60. The famous Morteratsch Glacier is at 22minute!

Exactly the same tour you can watch on that video in Winter. I love it when the train in the beginning of the journey drives without seeing any rails on the ground until Pontresina. Afterwards really winter conditions when the train reaches Bernina Pass and further.

Of course the first video shows more nature, but the Winter one is very exiting to watch what happens after the next bend...

Max, many thanks for posting these 2 incredible videos. The autumn one shows the beauty of the alpine scenery, while the winter one shows the icy beauty of the snow covered landscape.. What a feat it was to build a railway through such inaccessible terrain, and to be able to maintain it and keep it open all year round.. I hope one day to get the chance to travel on this railway as its a part of Switzerland which I haven't yet visited.
Thanks again,
Dee

Another interesting feature one can see on the autumn version of the film is the Anti-tank trap on 23.45 crossing the valley. It was built just before WW2 in order to block Switzerland from Nazi-German tanks arriving from Italy into that area.

I,m old enough to remember the worst winter of the last century....1947..How on earth did we get through it.No central heating,no electric fires and the like,no electric blankets,no double glazing, just a good old coal fire when coal was available, and us oldies called them ,,,the good old days.
