Believe it or not, in the 35 years we lived in Switzerland, we never went up in that region higher than Grindelwald! One of the reasons was that the Berner alps were relatively difficult to get to from where we lived near Lausanne. Most of our Alpine excursions were to Saas Fee, in the Valaisan Alps. This, too, boasted "The resort features the highest underground funicular railway in the world up to the skiing area and the highest revolving restaurant in the world at 3,500 m (11,500 feet).". However, I think we only once travelled on the funicular because our reason for going there (possibly nearly 70 times) was mountain walking combined with ease of access.

One thing that was very remarkable in our time there was the retreat of the glaciers above the village. The Feegletscher must have retreated a good 200 m between our first visit in 1964 and our last one in 1999. At first, it was a fairly gentle walk to the moraine but, at the end, it was a stiff climb. Another change over the same time was the way the village turned from a bucolic retreat into an Alpine holiday destination with constantly increasing amenities.

At that time I was married to a Swiss girl and her parents lived near Lausanne. So she showed me different restaurants in that area where we enjoyed also Eglifilet (Filet de perches) directly on Lake Geneva. They tasted a bit similar to the Cypriot "Barbounia" (red mullet) however not fried in oil but in brown butter, delicious....

Yes,my mouth waters at the filet de perches, but price? 25 years ago they were already CHF32 at a place, Chez Pitch, just outside Lausanne. Just looked it up, modest increase to 39.50!

Well, to go to a restaurant in Switzerland was always very expensive compared to Italy or Germany. Specially meat prices were hitting you. As I lived for a short while near St.Moritz I was used to pay high prices and the Filet de Perches was no difference. I remember that the cheapest meat dish on the menu was a platter for 2 with Buendner Fleisch (similar to Bresaola) accomplished with some gherkins and bread, at a place in Pontresina. It was CHF49 and 45 years ago....and I was glad that I was invited. 3 km's away you could enjoy this view on a sunny day towards Morteratsch Glacier which is nowadays nearly gone
