Can anyone help us with this? While cleaning the keyboard (while switched on!) I found my default email account in Windows 10 had vanished although the others are intact. I am struggling to make any sense of the many bits of advice on the internet.

Is there a quick way to fix this before I resort to taking the laptop into a shop?

what operating system ? windows - 10 etc ? and what email provider - outlook - aol - gmail etc

Start at the beginning

Who is your default email account with?
Have you tried to access the account from a web browser?

What program/app do you use to access your emails?

Perhaps (?) there was an icon somewhere that you have deleted. Look in the recycle bin.

Email account is with Cyta
We can access the account OK from our other machine so we haven't deleted the account with Cyta but all our sub folders/history were on the main laptop
We use Windows Live Mail 11
The recycle bin was emptied a while ago and is still empty.

Since your reply I've located the Windows Live Mail - WLM folder in AppData - and it contains the sub folders and contents, but I'm reticent to try to recreate the account and copy the data back in, in case it goes wrong

If you can see the account on another machine are all the emails still there too? If they are, then you should just be able to recreate it on your main laptop again. It all depends on what type of account it is (pop, imap etc).

Just work on the safe side and call into Computer SOS on Monday

Was there perhaps a little icon along the taskbar that you used to click on to open it? Or was it a shortcut on the desktop?

Have you tried clicking on the start button (is it still called that?) bottom left and and searching for WLM in the programs?
Or alternatively, typing it into the search box next to the start button to see if you can find it there?

I'm afraid I don't use WLM so can't replicate it on my PC

Just a quick update. I took my laptop into SOS and one of their technicians resurrected my default email account and downloaded the last couple of months' emails from Cyta. I've since spent a day or so re-importing the data into the various folders. It's good to know we have such a skilled and reliable support company as Computer SOS to call on.
