I remember the last Popes visit to Paphos.

They painted the bottoms of the trees on the way to the harbour
"white".

This is done in many hot countries, in essence it protects the the tree bark amongst other things

I remember as a kid on holiday here in the 60s, asking my parents, why the tree trunks were painted white, and it wasn't anything to do with Popes visits,

I doubt that he brought his speedos with him.
