In our last blog we took a walk down Bar Street, as part of our series on Kato Paphos. In this article we put that series on hold to do a bit of Urban Exploring, so join us as we pick through the broken debris of some of the abandoned Bar Street clubs...

Read the article and chat about it below...

Sad and fascinating at the same time. Thanks for sharing. As you say there are people living there so it can't just be knocked down.

Another good Blog Dominic but when did you last go to pole dancing club's !974 ? - Those are private dance booths paid for in advance and would have had a curtain up the front - Not that i'm an expert on this sort of thing someone told me.

Yes, have walked through that part of Bar Street in daylight with friends several years ago. We wondered why the Mayor hasn't had these ghastly redundant buildings pulled down? That area should be re developed With useful new buildings for tourists to stay.
Why is the Mayor so keen to cause trouble for ERA and the other shops there?

Probably because one does not have permission , and the others are legal, strange that you are having a pop at the mayor, surely you should be praising the mayor for upholding the rule of law?

Well, even the President has intervened in the ERA dispute..... why keep the ghastly old buildings in Bar St. Unused, just taking up urban space which could be used for something else which is more useful?

There are people that own the apartments above many of those bars so why should anyone pull them down?

I wondered about the Bars and the property as a whole including any domestic housing.
The buildings belong to someone and probably not the Mayor..

Surely the Authorities should have them properly boarded up so that at least it looks more tasteful. 8-)

The apartments above the abandoned bars are definitely being lived in. So it isn't just a case of bulldozing everything.

Perhaps what is needed is a Public Cleanup, along the lines of the Beach Cleanups that occur? Or board it all up and have a mural competition like they did in Old Paphos? Turn the eyesore into a tourist attraction until the bars are sold.

I think bar street could be a tourist attraction as it is. There are many places where tourists go to see rack and ruin, such as the many abandoned villages in the Paphos area.
Sign boards giving the history of each bar, together with some drunk actors giving a dramatic re-enactment of the street at it's height, would add to the tourist experience. In addition I can see a walking tour of the derelict and burnt out bars being very successful. A souvenir shop at the exits from the street would be a money-spinner I am sure.
Clearly the mayor has this in mind, or he would have taken action by now.

;)

The president should keep his nose out, their are building regulations that should apply to everyone, because someone might have the ear of the president, it shouldn't overrun th
e rule of law

,Wonder if you know exactly what happened WHL? I know from personal experience, that planning documents can get 'misplaced' in the Land Registry. When I had to sell our previous house, the whole sale of the property could have been badly delayed or even fallen through, because the Land Registry had failed to put a planning approval document on its file. They were saying that an addition to the house was illegal.
Luckily, i found a copy of the vital document on our house file. But my solicitor suggested we get a Land Surveyor she knew to go to the LR and retrieve the missing document and file it.. Which he found and did fortunately, by dint of searching there himself. Don't know how exactly he was able to do that, but his bill for his efforts must have been sufficient!

The point here, it is unclear exactly what procedure was followed when the original building first occupied by Debenhams was finished. I seem to remember it was something to do with the Shacolas Group.
