Do you still have to go through your GP to see a Specialist? I read somewhere that a person can now go directly to say, a Physiotherapist to make an appointment rather than go to their GP and then be referred.

You need a referral from a GP or specialist, otherwise you will have to pay private for the treatment

Yes, you can go direct to a specialist without a referral from your personal doctor & it will cost you €25

I think the only specialism you can see without a referral is for gynaecologist for smear tests & radiology for mammogram

What happened to dental treatment under GESY? Wasn´t it planned to be covered this year?

Another question: what if you need to see a specialist doctor in an emergency? Can you go to a private hospital in that case and be covered by GESY? My neighbour is suffering (among other things) from kidney stones and was referred to a urologist at a private hospital by her GESY-GP. She was treated with some temporary success, but when the pain reoccurred she was told by that she´d need another referral (which she couldn´t get at a Saturday night). What is she supposed to do? Isn´t being in pain due to a colic regarded enough of an emergency to justify going to the same (private) hospital she has been at before (where they already know her medical history, x-rays etc.)?

Re dental treatment. At the moment just a clean and a checkup are covered.

What your neighbour should have done was ask the GP for another referral just before the first one ran out. I believe they are for 6 months, and it is only a matter of making a phone call.

She only received that referral a week ago but when she called the hospital they said she´d have to pay privately. Something doesn´t seem to add up. Maybe there is some kind of miscommunication. I´ll recommend to her to ask again.
She was given an "emergency appointment" for a CT scan to localize the kidney stone and determine it´s size almost a week later. Something like that doesn´t increase my confidence in GESY.

Just back from Blue Cross no referral from P.D. not required for smear test total cost so far 100 euro includes 6 euro for gesy results in two weeks.

Re clean up, my wife had her first, Gesy dental clean up, my wife says don't expect to much,
her clean up coincided of a light clean, one step up from her brushing her own teeth.

I got one free descale and polish, but I needed it.
My wife didn't need it so deferred it for next time

I suppose it depends on which dentist and what is needed. I certainly got a decent scrape / scale and polish last time . Last week I opted to leave it until next time
