It's been five years since cremation was made legal in Cyprus after a long battle with the Orthodox church, but there is still no private or state-run crematorium. However, this could change by 2023, provided that no further rezoning, town planning restrictions, or bureaucracy causes delay....

Its obviously not a viable commercial enterprise, business people would be falling over each other to get one started.

Agreed, as I have pointed out with facts and figures several years ago.

Coincidentally we have just updated our wills and taken out funeral plans and the matter of cremation is mentioned in all the documentation. We’re not holding our breath but it would be great if it was an option for us - many years in the future of course.

I still want to be fired out to sea from a huge catapult purpose-built for the task on top of the Akamas.

A former neighbour at Kamares, Clive Turner, spent about 10 years of his time in Cyprus fighting every inch of the way to build this much needed facility. He told me that all the necessary legal hoops had been successfully been cleared, finance had been raised, a suitable plot of land for it found, but what was holding it up was final agreement of the Govt and Orthodox Church. It had been hinted that permission to build it might be given to build it on an Industrial Estate. Rather than the more rural location he had in mind.
Sadly, he and his wife have recently left the island, as age and failing health became a factor.
