Many years ago when we had a pergola built with a tiled roof, we were advised that we had to obtain an architects drawing, and to apply for a licence in advance. An inspection would then take place and we would be advised whether or not we were exceeding our permitted covered area. Failing to apply for a licence would affect selling in the future.

We have since decided to have another tiled pergola built. This time we have been advised that if we have an asphfalt roof we do not need to apply for a licence to build.

Seems strange to us. Whether or not you use asphfalt or tiles it's still covered.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Ask someone from the town hall and get it from the horses mouth, why waste time and money if there is a chance it might be illegal
