Electricity bills from August 38%!! higher...

EAC announced that the electricity bills from August will be 38% higher, due to increased fuel prices and penalties from EU for high pollution and these penalties will raise every year until Cyprus changes a lot in producing electricity.

Owners of a photovoltaic system to produce their own electricity will smile as their system is more profitable from now and payback time from their investment even shorter than already. I realize that more and more photovoltaic modules one can see on house roofs all around which shows that people wake up...

I won't be smiling. Higher electricity bills will effect everybody. They will make restaurant visits more expensive for one. Certainly not a time to gloat.

Some people are on the bread line and this will mean less food on their kids plates, gloating that you have panels on your roofs, isn't cool.

How unpleasant to gloat about higher electricity prices. I feel sorry for those who are already struggling and will be hit once again.

Opening the, albiet small, energy market in Cyprus to competition would help as would doing deals to pipe-in electricity from nearby countries.

There are plans to hook up with Egypt and Israel, where energy is concerned, they are the only nearby country's capable , Syria/ Lebanon are in no position to supply power... If you are suggesting Turkey provides power, then this is just another one of your wind up posts.

It was absolutely not my intention to gloat. My wording "smile" was however the wrong one which led perhaps to the impression I am looking forward to electricity price rises. Also my own electricity bill will be higher as I installed another air-con in my bedroom in this very hot summer. It supposed to be just a reminder that everybody could invest in photovoltaic in order to reduce not only the own electricity bill but also doing something for the environment when his budged is allowing it. It would also reduce the future penalties from EU for CO2 emissions etc etc...

By the way: I am not earning any more money at all, if Green Air installs more PV systems. Photovoltaic and other systems using the power of the Sun was and is my biggest hobby since more than 35 years now when I started putting solar panels for underfloor heating on my house in Germany when nobody else had an idea about it. It not only reduced the temperature in the loft in summer through shading, but also my diesel consumption went down 8000 l per year.

Fair enough. I imagine as English is not your first language the nuances must occasionally trip you up. I remember a Dutch person I used to work with who spoke excellent English but who had only been taught the most basic (and rudest) English swear words. Consequently he would occasionally come out with utter filth without realising it.

I'm in the same boat as Cyprusmax as far as language is concerned and am still struggling to understand what's wrong with his use of "smile".

So why did you put a like on Dominic's post saying that it's not a time to gloat, or did you misunderstand that ?

It implies you are happy that the price is going up so that other people will have to pay more but you won't because you have solar panels.

In my naive mind it merely implied that you're patting yourself on the shoulder for having made the right move. Similar to "laughing all the way to the bank" if you e.g. won at the casino.

Competitive electricity market key to lower prices, says minister

The only viable way to reduce the price of electricity bills in Cyprus is to open up the electricity market to private companies, Energy Minister Natasa Pilides said on Tuesday.

Her comments after a meeting of the House energy committee come amid a 38 per cent annual hike in electricity bills which has prompted consumer associations and political parties to urge action to protect the public.

The House committee met to discuss bills regulating the electricity market, the natural gas market and Cera (Cyprus energy regulatory authority).

Pilides confirmed that the government is currently in talks with stakeholders to find solutions to the issues related to the efficient and smooth functioning of the market, which will also ensure harmonisation with remaining European markets.

“There is great interest from private companies wishing to operate in the electricity sector. By fully opening up the market, we will be offering more solutions to customers and at the same time create opportunities for the renewable energy market to make its mark in the island,” she said.

Regarding the last point, Pilides said the energy ministry is fully focused on the transition to green energy, which she said will significantly reduce the price of electricity bills for households and businesses alike.

Moreover, she said that other government plans regarding the transformation of the energy market in Cyprus include passing a bill that will make the Natural Gas Public Company (Defa) a legal entity under public law, considering the increasing importance of natural gas (LNG) in the island.

“The construction of infrastructure for LNG is progressing and the aim is to be completed around the end of 2022,” Pilides said.

Other projects include the promotion and improvement of energy storage technologies that will help renewable energy compete on an equal footing with conventional energy technologies.

“The framework of this incentive plan has already been prepared by the energy ministry and will be officially discussed this week with the state aid commission. The budget available for the promotion of storage technology is €40m and may be increased to €89m,” she said.

“The environmental impact study carried out by the department of environment, will clearly show us where renewable energy projects could have greater penetration.”

A budget of €334m in the next seven years is reserved for green projects. In 2021, over €127m were used from the budget.

Finally, Pilides said that between 2022 and 2025, around 400,000 smart meter readers will be installed in the country and a framework for renewable energy communities promoting microgrids, will also be implemented.

End to shocking electricity bills price hike just around the corner :x

An end to the shocking 38 per cent price hike set by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus since August is just around the corner, according to Philenews.

The government’s decision has already been taken for electricity bills to be reduced temporarily and for the Authority’s reserve fund to bear the cost for this, insiders said.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Energy and that of Finance are meeting with the board of EAC to discuss the price hikes which have raised a storm of protests from the public.

But the meeting is up to a great degree just formal, an insider also said.

Last week, the EAC said the historically low energy prices in 2020 were highly unusual – citing costlier fuel internationally as pushing up costs this year.

Nonetheless, Cypriot consumers face among the highest electricity bills in the EU.

And the Cyprus Consumers Association has accused the EAC of leaving Cyprus in the Middle Ages as it produces its energy from oil which is subject to hefty fines from the EU.

The taxpayers in turn foot the bill for the fines placed on Cyprus from the EU.
