Because people were getting their weekly work test on a Thursday or Friday so they still had a test that was valid for 72 hours that covered a weekend. The testing stats back up that end of week peak.

My assumption is that that to discourage this and ‘encourage’ vaccination they have removed the weekly testing for workers, so as Tammy says, twice weekly tests will be required to cover both socialising at the weekend and work. Say paying for this twice a week is going to cost in the region of €80 a month which is quite a chunk for those on typical salaries here.
