We went there about 10 years ago and remember it well. Boy was it hot. We were enroute from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in July in a Hertz hire car which was large and new. There were road signs - switch off your car air conditioning - I can understand why as the temperature gauge on the car kept going into the red due to the extreme temperatures. Yes the temperature gauge went down but of course we were gasping in the car without the aircon on. We put up with it as long as we could but had to put it back on. And so it went on, aircon off, aircon on. Eventually arrived in Las Vegas but temperature was still over 100f. Our trip started in San Francisco - could not believe how cold it was there though - we had to buy fleeces to keep warm!

Why were there signs saying switch off your air conditioning?

In extreme heat people tend to turn the car aircon up ( to make it colder) when really they should be turning it down or off - The compressed fridge gas becomes hot in normal conditions but in extreme heat it goes over the top and the condenser radiator which is fitted at the front of the vehicle alongside the cars coolant radiator cannot dissipate the excess heat and so causes the cars cooling system to overheat and boil the engine - So ideally turn the aircon right down or better still off when travelling in extreme heat
