Following investigations, the relevant authorities reached the conclusion that yesterday???s huge fire in the are of Tala was caused by cables of the Electricity Authority which came into contact with each other and caused sparks....

I have heard of this happening before,I've known of a few fires starting with cables touching, pigeons perching on power lines then taking off making the cables sway and bounce together sparking was the cause of a big fire in Agious Demitrianos a few years ago, although the cables should be fairly taut they do slacken after a time

There are spacers that the electric board put on the wires where it is known to be a problem. We have some on the wires past our house.

Would EAC then be liable for the damage caused?

Soon after we first moved to Polemi, there was a high wind as we sat in the back garden. We then heard a flash and a bang. We assumed it was lightning to start with, but it became apparent that two of the cables on the electricity line had touched in the wind. I can easily see how it start a fire.
After the EAC had repaired the lines, they also installed spacers, as Trev says. It would seem that they need to be installing them before there are issues, to prevent this sort of thing.

It amazes me that the installation of spacers is not policy.

Can vouch for the wires causing fires. I spotted one outside a neighbouring house which caused a fire. Fire brigade on sight in minutes from my call to stop it. On the same section of cables we had 3 power cuts in a week definitely caused by pigeons - a huge flock of pigeons took a liking to this side of Polemi last autumn. After the 3rd time of replacing the big fuses the EAC put the spacers in and, fingers crossed, no problems since. Fortunately the EAC guy lives in Polemi and has the vineyard below us so I have a direct route for future problems, though they did respond very well to my phone calls at the time.

EAC should definitely do something about the electricity supply cables in Kamares.A lot of the houses there require 3 phase wiring, which often results in power lines with 5 separate cables. There are often strong winds there due to exposed location coupled with several ravines and many steep hills. Parts of the roads in Kamares often have massive fir trees in the pavements as well as these power lines. There used to be 3 of these trees in the pavement outside my house. I used to have to ring EAC to ask them to trim the branch of a tree to free the power lines which were going through the tree.

I would imagine that you are clicking on a picture rather than the video that is a bit below it.

Several years ago we were frequently subjected to one or maybe two phases of our three phase supply being cut off. We worked out that the overhead cables leading down to our neighbours had become slack and between birds sitting on them or the wind blowing them about, the insulation covering had become sufficiently worn to cause a short in one or other cable, hence our partial outages. Each time EAC sent a team to replace the cables or the appropriate fuse or both, but nobody listened to my hubby telling them that if there were spacers, it wouldn't happen.
Finally, there was a bigger than usual outage and I think a more senior guy was sent out with the team to investigate why they had to keep replacing cables and fuses in this particular location. He listened to hubby and since they installed spacers, we have had no problems as a result.
