Can anyone put me right concerning applying for an MEU1. Our neighbour has just arrived here to live and obviously he needs to apply. It’s been quite a few years since we got our papers and what with the virus it’s probably all changed now. Any information would be helpful

Are they UK citizens? If they are, they will be unable to get the MEU1. I would suggest that they contact the British High Commission. They would have had to have been here before and up to December 31st 2020 to have been protected by the Withdrawal Agreement.

No, actually he is Irish with an Irish passport, so I assume that will make a difference?

It makes a big difference, As an EU citizen, he has the automatic right to live and work in any EU country.

Surely as he plans to live here permanently doesn’t he still need an MEU1 to get registered?

I think they will be applying for MEU3 not MEU1, I wish them all the best.

I think that Mandy is right, the Irish friend should apply for an MEU1. You can't apply for an MEU3 until you have been resident here for 5years.

Hi Mandy
Yes as an Irish National he will need to to make his appointment at immigration (take passport) for his MEU1. They should give him details of what he will need to take on the day of the appointment.
