Surprise of the first hot night

No wonder my dog was barking like mad.....
Only 3 m away from dog and entrance
Is every year in the garden and active at night as soon as it is more than 20C
First time I managed to do pics hence dog was barking...

Thank you so much Max, I love hedgehogs, sadly, we haven't seen one in our garden for a couple of years now.

That must have been very upsetting Dominic, I nearly speared one with a garden fork once when I decided to move a grass that had outgrown it's space, it was only when I lifted the plant that I discovered a hibernating hedgehog
....
Thankfully, I hadn't injured the poor thing & relocated it to a safer haven.
Oddly enough, that was the last time we saw one in our garden.

With the lack of rain they are after the water. Put always some trays with water in the garden, as a birds bath as well..

Good point Max, I feed several feral cats, so there is always water on my back patio. I know cats and hedgehogs don't usually mix, but it's surprising the creatures I sometimes see at the water bowls! And the food bowls if there's ever anything left!!

A different story this morning, although bright and sunny that wind is more then cool..a big change from yesterday, nice pics of the hog.

The cold front is hitting the hot air masses further East of Cyprus which results in strong wind. Warmth back after tomorrow as I mentioned in another thread yesterday.

At the moment there are a lot of slugs and snails around in our gardens. They are both not good to feed them to hedgehogs in order to keep them in your place.
Slugs and snails are the primary carriers for the lungworm which is the biggest killer of hedgehogs except for us and our careless behaviour!!

I don't care how it looks, but I have always some polystyrene floating in the pool and you will not believe how many animals survived (lizards, chameleon, field mouse...) They hold on also on the floating dispenser for chlorine tablets I am using to avoid pipes getting blocked from it.

Hi Max, I used to look after the hedgehogs in my garden back in the UK and they were full of fleas. They used to jump (the fleas) onto my cats but I don't think they were happy and jumped back onto the hedgehogs. I don't know why.
I love nature and sit for hours watching all kinds of animals. As much as I don't like ants about in the house, I am fascinated by them and how they seek out food and establish a trail, and then carry huge (to them) chunks of food back to the nest.

Hi Aphrodite, As far as I know hedgehog flees suck only on hedgehogs not on other animals as they have a specific skin. If they jump by accident on a different mammal they will die for various reasons. (so they are host-specific)

What a good idea. You really do seem to love animals Max, and think out what they need to keep them safe from us humans! If we get a pool with our next place (quite happy to do without one though, we prefer the sea) we will definitely adopt this "floating lifesaver" idea.

Yes I do Bograt, I even cannot kill poisonous snakes when they land in the pool skimmer. Recently I rescued a small one and carried it in a water bucket and released it 1 mile away from the house. Must explain that 15 years ago I was the helper of Snake George, to collect vipers from the forest for his reptile park in Peyia. I was quite scared to hold the sack while George was putting the snakes into it....
