My best remembrance of VE day was the year my husband and I were on a holiday which started in Hong Kong and involved train travel to Moscow, via Beijing, Mongolia and Irkutsk .. an amazing trip in the days of the Communist regime. We had forgotten about VE day, but as we entered the restaurant car of the Trans Siberian Express, we were met by beaming staff. They told us they wanted to celebrate this important day with their British friends!
We were offered Russian Champagne with breakfast! Later on the Red Wine flowed with dinner when Caviar was also included. To say that we were surprised by this was an understatement!
But it does evoke happy memories even now!

Yes, I agree with the previous poster. My parents generation made many personal sacrifices, and they served in the Royal Navy or the RAF. during much of WW11. My uncle was on the Prince of Wales, in Singapore when she was bombed by the Japanese. Although sucked down by the ship as she sank, miraculously he was rescued and left Singapore the day before it
fell to theJapanese. After sick leave, he continued to serve with the RN to the surrender in Tokyo 1945.
