Two police officers are being treated at the Paphos General Hospital, after suffering injuries following an attack last night by a number of people attending a party in the Akamas community of Inia, in violation of the pandemic restrictions.

The officers arrived at the scene to investigate, following a tip off. They informed those attending that they would be fined in accordance to the relevant protocols. According to the police report, they were attacked, punched and their uniform torn.

The two officers suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the Paphos General.
One of them had a shoulder fracture and the other, suffered serious blows to his face and torso. They were kept overnight for treatment.

When police returned to the scene with more of its members, the party goers and the attackers had gone.

Based on the testimony of the injured police officers, other witnesses and evidence at the scene, three arrest warrants have been issued, with more expected, as people are being identified.

Coronavirus: police officers attacked after breaking up Paphos party

Two police officers were attacked and sent to hospital after trying to break up a party in Paphos on Saturday night, while a number of people are set to be arrested for the fracas, it emerged on Sunday.

According to police, officers received a report at around 7:30pm that a large number of people were concentrated in a house at Inia village. After sending a patrol car, police found a gathering of some 20 to 25 people, all of which initially were very cooperative and broke up the party.

Nonetheless, police received yet another report that the gathering was still ongoing. Sending a patrol car for a second time, as soon as officers arrived at the scene, many of the people reacted angrily to the news that they were to be booked and began to attack the policemen.

Two of the police officers sustained injuries that required them to be treated at Paphos hospital. Specifically, one fractured his left shoulder while another was being treated for injuries sustained after receiving a number of blows to his face and lower lip. A third police officer had his shirt ripped off in the fracas, while a firefighter and army officer who were involved in patrols as part of coronavirus measure implementations were also attacked.

Police has issued three arrest warrants and are searching for more people who were involved. Investigations continue.

Don't police offers have tasers to defebd themselves. I'd even deem the use of a gun justfied in such situation.

I don't think they do have Tasers here in Cyprus. Of course as you will know they do have guns..

Well when is it justified then, if not when you are being attacked?

Increase in penalties for assaults on police officers

Penalties for attacks on public officials on duty are to be increased, the justice minister announced on Wednesday.
Articles 243 and 244 of the criminal code, concerning assault offences, will therefore be amended.

Justice Minister George Savvides said the decision to amend the law follows a recent increase in assaults on police officers.

Jail time for offenders will be increased from two to three years.

Assaults that actually cause bodily harm will be punishable with a sentence of up to five years in jail.

Good! Police officers have a duty to enforce the law! The trouble here is that by nature people here have quick tempers and many verbal altercations seem to end up as a bout of fisticuffs, or even GBH. Stiffer penalties may deter those who attack the police.

If they don't they should. Also maybe some pepper spray might be useful and cheaper than a taser.
