Some predictable suggestions. I'll refrain from speculating on the motives behind the suggestions of arabic and asian names.

The truth of the matter is that Smith remains the most common, followed by Jones, Taylor, Brown, Williams etc. as you would expect.

The origins of more than 45,000 surnames in Britain have been revealed by a team of university researchers
The four-year study, led by a team from the University of West of England in Bristol, has investigated the linguistic origins of every surname; from the most popular to some of the most obscure

Four years to study this!!! I am just enjoying some of your suggestions

I know the question was the UK but if you narrow searches down into City’s then Patel is No. 1 and Smith is second in London for example, closely followed by Shah and Singh although some of the ones you mentioned are also in the top 10.

I read in an article that Mohammed was the most popular given name in the UK and put two and two together and most probably got five.so no ulterior motives from me. I've been to Gujerat where almost everyone is called Patel and my own surname is the most common name in the north east of Scotland, a bit like Smith or Jones.
