Appointments for coronavirus vaccinations will be available for people aged 79 and over as from Tuesday, February 9, the health ministry said on Monday as it unveiled phase three of its national Covid-19 vaccination programme.

Phase three covers people aged 75 to 79, but as in the case of over 80-year-olds the ministry is choosing to sub-categorise into smaller age groups so as to prevent the scramble that followed the initial launch of its vaccination portal.

The vaccination portal is for people registered with GESY.
Log on to the Beneficiary Portal and in the Dashboard section there is a Covid Vaccination section to complete.

You can ring 1474 when your age group comes up and they will book an appointment for you.

It's all a bit confusing. It was supposed to be 75-79 years old, at least initially. But its changed to over 79 this week. At the same time both health professionals and people from vulnerable groups are both going ahead. Can't help wondering if theres a reason why vaccine isn't really going to many people in the age group concerned?

7,200 doses of AstraZeneca arrived on Monday and Cyprus “ expects” or hopes for another 69000 jabs on March 1st but this is part of the disputed order that has caused all the fuss.
There is also confusion about the numbers vaccinated here . This from CNA yesterday
‘Regarding Cyprus, Dr Petrou said that the Scientific Advisory Committee on the coronavirus has decided to follow the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine without age restrictions.
The vaccination program will proceed according to the availability of vaccines, he said, adding that to date around 33,000 people have received both doses of a vaccine, while around 22,000 have received the first dose.
It is recalled that the vaccination portal for the age group of 79 and over has been opened, while vaccinations continue for health professionals and vulnerable groups.”
However the number the government give to the various agencies monitoring the worldwide vaccine effort up until 08Feb is 22,,813 which is 2.6% of the population.
Malta have up to the 8th of Feb vaccinated 29,339 or 6.6% of the population so one assumes they are getting more vaccine than Cyprus despite being half our population or the vaccine counting has become “confused” here but as the Minister famously said in his Al Jazeera video “ this is Cyprus” .

Well its only the 10th March today. So I wonder if once this current batch of Astra Zenacca is finished there will be further deliveries of vaccine before the 1st March, which is several weeks ahead?
Last night I saw on IN Cyprus that the Cypriot Union Of Pensioners are saying that in Greece the AZ vaccine is only being used for people under 65 years. This because of doubts about its effect on older people. So they are reluctant to accept it.

Let’s not forget that the countries that did not approve AZ vaccine for the over 65 age groups did so because there was insufficient data to prove that it was effective, which is NOT the same as saying it doesn’t work, just that they felt they couldn’t prove it for a specific segment based in the trial sample. It’s pretty much the glas half full / half empty debate.

The real proof will come formally from the real world data of vaccinations being given to mass populations rather than the volunteer groups. It’s simple, the more data you have the more accurate you can be. Based on the roll out of vaccine in U.K to the older population and the numbers being reported, it’s seems very likely to me that all the vaccines in use are proving very effective.

9,264 vaccination appointments for citizens over 76

As of tomorrow 12 February, people over 76 years of age will have access to the Vaccination Portal in order to arrange a vaccination appointment. According to the National Vaccination Plan for COVID-19 implementation people belonging to the 75-79 age group, who have not arranged an appointment the previous weeks or have not received the vaccine yet, will have priority.

In total there will be 9,264 appointments available.

Citizens falling into the prioritized age group for vaccination are recommended to arrange an appointment on the first available day and hour, in order to ensure a continuous flow in the Vaccination Centres.
