New Law on Animal Welfare Passed

The following was announced by the Government Press Office this afternoon:

The Law on Animal Welfare was passed

A big step for the welfare of animals in our country was achieved today

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment welcomes with particular satisfaction the vote today by the House of Representatives, the amending Bill on the protection and welfare of animals. The bill was prepared by the Ministry and approved by the Council of Ministers after extensive consultation with all stakeholders, with the aim of achieving the maximum possible consensus.

Very pleased that at last a new law to improve and safeguard the welfare of animals has been passed. I hope that local authorities including the police will enforce it.
I notice that it is now illegal to keep dogs and cats on balconies and terraces.

I'm sure the cats are capable of fending for themselves. If they aren't being fed in the usual place they'll move elsewhere while looking for food. Perhaps the first thing needed is to catch and neuter any cats which haven't been 'done'.

Certainly a step in the right direction but let us see another one in a couple of years.
