Meu 1 insurance cover

On the way back from swimming this morning I was listening to Rock FM,when the lady from Status Insurance came on to give insurance advice. Now I may not have been giving it my full attention but the gist of it was,if you are applying for your Meu 1 you need to show that you have insurance cover to repatriate your body to your country of origin should you die here. It seems that the Cyprus government will not cover the cost of burial if you can't afford to and they are running out of space anyway. Not 100% sure that I heard this correctly,so stand to be corrected.

My first year's insurance cover for MEU1 just expired. Am I required by law to renew? Does anyone know?

Yes but get an MEU3 if you intend to stay as a resident of CY.

Strange. I don´t have such insurance and received my MEU1 without problem.

Not true in all cases I'm afraid. I had bypass surgery on mine.
