We’ve had them here in Paphos for a while now, in alpha mega and Paps.
I refuse to use them, I’m not an employee I’m a customer, and these tills steal people’s jobs

They’re not hitting it off here too well. The last few times I have been in Alfa Mega, a staff member has been standing alone amongst the self-service tills looking quite fed up!

I don't like them either.. The last time I was in the UK a couple of years ago the local Asda had almost all self service check outs. I think there were about 3 out of mre than 20 that were 'manned'

Hate them with a passion. I had to use them a couple of times in UK airports and failed miserably , resulting in a long line of customers giving me the evil eye with a chorus of tut tutting thrown in for good measure, and a young employee having to sort it out for me,

I have had a couple of goes with the self-service tills - second time I wanted to do it on my own and all went well until I started to pack my shopping bag after I scanned each item - as I do when the cashier at the till has scanned and passed on the items. I was told to put the items back on the tray as it confused the calculating process and that no item should be moved until all had been scanned. In the end the supervisor came, deleted the transaction and we had to start from scratch - so I ended up with two members of staff having to help as well as taking longer! Staff at Customer Services still happy to serve customers who only have a few items, so prefer this option if there are long / slow queues at the tills.

I discovered them on a visit to the UK. I won't use them and would go elsewhere if there was no human alternative on site. They do away with people's jobs, they do not improve the "customer experience" and are just there to increase profit. I don't see why I should do the job of an employee and not even get paid.

Ooooft, have to disagree with most of the above! Once you get used to them, they are 'the best thing sliced bread.' I too, have experienced the 'tinny voice' telling me to place something back on the scale, or in the correct position

GRRRR!
And yes, you do get the very odd malfunction (rarely nowadays in the UK) but, they have moved forward hugely in the past few years. To be honest, although I love cooking, I cannot abide food shopping so, the sooner I can get out of a shop . . . . . . . . .the happier I am. Quick it is once you get the hang of it.
And, I am an old fart.

PS I now actively search out a self-service till.

Presumably the above "moaners" also don't do self check-in and labelling of luggage at airports either.

I doubt the frequency is equivalent

I have mixed feelings. When I was back in the UK some of my best conversations were with the automatic checkout machines. They were always polite.

I hated these machines initially, but when you get used to them they are much quicker. If all check outs are busy, I often go to the 'machine'. Usually there is a member of staff hovering near by who can rescue me should I make a mistake. I find the ones in Paps are more complicated than some.
While in the UK, many stores now have them. I wish that they all worked the same way, but unfortunately, there seem to be many variations and I find some ones are easier than others.

I didn't know Paps had self checkouts. Can you get cash back from the self checkouts ??

No, don't think so. The self checkouts are to one side of the manned ones. at the big Paps on Ellados Ave.
