Shameful but seems to be the norm for some people! Our beautiful village is full of discarded water bottles, coffee containers, cigarette packets, now masks and other detritus ! Every so often they have a clean up, within days it is happening again. So sad! Education is needed! Starts at home.

I just do not understand the mentality of people who throw trash on beaches or elsewhere.

They don't throw trash on beaches. They throw it from ships, and it gets washed ashore. You can go to remote, inaccessible beaches on the Akamas and you will find lots of crap. It isn't left by tourists. Indeed, this articles would suggest that tourists actually help. Who knows, perhaps some of them pick up the crap that is washed up? I know we do and I am fairly certain we aren't alone.

It's an age old problem with Cyprus, it still barely recycles 20% of its rubbish and has always been a place where residents are happy to dump rubbish wherever they feel like.
Didn't Linda Leblanc try to do something in Tala not so long ago to highlight the local issues there?

We always take a bin liner when we go to our favourite beach area and spend a few minutes picking up other people,s rubbish ,[have watched many times as they just stand up and walk away after their picnic leaving empty takeaway containers and bottles ] .sadly to say mainly local people .

People (Cypriots) discarding rubbish is a problem here.. I walk down our lane 5 time a day and see newly discarded rubbish very frequently, presumably just thrown from vehicles.. I even see rubbish that has been put in a tied bag and thrown onto the verge or into the edge of a field..
Strange when the Cypriot ladies will wash the dust and debris from their front porches and the roadway with a hosepipe

Photo Lady,

Linda LeBlanc is for Peyia, while her opposite number is Cathi Delaney in Tala.
Yes, Cathy Delaney works hard in Tala to try to improve things

Meanwhile, back in the UK...

Last week our #GBCHeroes waste team picked up 820kg of litter from the A3 after 4 nights work. Afterwards we swept the same section of road and picked up 8600kg more. That’s over 9 tonnes!

Please don’t toss your litter – take it home and help us keep our roads clean.

over here in Larnaca, we have had underground recycle bins installed. I first saw these in Holland many years ago, and they are a fantastic idea, all the waste goes under ground, no mess, no cats ripping bags open, a lorry comes along and changes it, we also have a recycle collection every Thursday, you leave your plastics, paper etc out side your property, and a truck comes and picks it up, Ive got to say nearly every house has a bag outside, for collection which is good news.

We finally made it to Cyprus about three weeks ago and have been mooching about. One of the first things we did, was to join a clean up gang in our area,(Neo Chorio) and we are scheduled to do a randomly selected beach clean in October.
