The national flag features the shape of the entirety of the island, with two olive branches below (a symbol of peace between the island’s two communities) on white (another symbol of peace). The olive branches signify peace between the Greeks and Turks. The map on the flag is a copper-orange colour, symbolising the large deposits of copper ore on the island, from which it may have received its name.

Cyprus marks 60 years since independence from Britain without fanfare on Sunday, as the small island remains divided and home to foreign bases and a UN peacekeeping force.

The handover came on the night of August 15-16, 1960 from Britain’s last governor, Sir Hugh Foot, to Cyprus’s first president, Greek-Orthodox Archbishop Makarios.

The Republic of Cyprus moved formal commemorations to October 1 for “practical reasons”, Ioannou added, pointing to the searing mid-August heat and a key Christian religious holiday.

The flag was designed by art teacher İsmet Güney. Let us not forget that the designer was a Turkish Cypriot.

Between parentheses, I have often wondered whether this is one reason why we see it so little compared to the Greek flag.

The profusion of Greek flags is a guarantor of continued division in my view. It does the Greek speaking Cypriot cause no good at all. Whilst they continue to fly in the Republic. In the occupied north the two Turkish flags will grow in use.

Yes I have. It is so frustrating to see so many Greek flags in the Republic. There is even one of the 'Coup' flags flying on the coast near Chloraka!! My point is that the profusion of either flag is denigrating the notion of the real flag and thus the identity of Cyprus. I know so many people that think the Republic is part of Greece and that is entirely down to their ridiculous habit of flying the Greek flag.

I suspect that it is not general Greek citizens residing in Cyprus that fly the flag so often. You see it everywhere and particularly near Public buildings or Churches. It just makes you wonder about the mindset of Greek speaking Cypriots who complain about the huge flag on the mountain overlooking Nicosia, describing it as a provocation yet they fail to identify the profusion of another States flag in their own Country.

They are not going to complain are they! They do however complain about 37% of the country being occupied but fail to see that the profusion of Greek flags merely supports the claim of the Dictator in Ankara, that Cyprus is still bent on enosis of some kind.
It will be interesting to see how loudly they cry foul when the rest of the Island is taken and Greece and EU do nothing to stop it.

When Cyprus became independent in 1960 It was in expectation of the new Govt under Bishop or President Makarios, it was composed of Greek and Turkish Cypriots. But in ratio of 2/3 GC and 1/3 Turkish Cypriots. Unfortunately, even with a Turkish Cypriot vice President, it couldn't work effectively. Before the Independence there was a competition held to design a new flag for Cyprus, which was won by the Turkish Cypriot. Despite the hope that this flag was designed with for a peaceful future, it was not to be. Wonder if anyone knows whether there was a similar competition to produce a new national anthem for the new State?

In the constitution it was allowed for the Greek/Turkish flags, to be flown over Church/mosque ,,,,,,,, and Schools both greek and Turkish

You got to be on a wind up, over the occupied north there are tens of thousands of turkish flags along with the psudo states flag, so spare us , its the greek speaking cypriots fault,

Not only Kerynia , every spare inch of sky is covered in red flags, the amount of Greek flags is minimal in comparison .

If only both sides would take their nationalist flags down, they serve little useful purpose.. and simply fly the Cyprus flag, that might be a start...

There will always be problems while the island stays divided. The latest and currently the worst is the ongoing situation over the extraction of gas.

I asked a bar owner many years ago why were flying the Greek flag and not the Cyprus flag and they told me that the reason is because it was designed by a Turkish Cypriot.
