I was talking to our pool man earlier today. He told me that it depends on the state of the pool and Its water. In a normal summer when pool use is quite heavy, he back washes it twice a week. But this year with much fewer people on the complex using it, he is only back washing it once weekly.

I always get an indication of when a backwash is due by noting the pressure gauge on top of the filter...In time the pressure gauge indicates a high pressure, that's when a backwash should be done...

There is usually a small sight tube on the filter casing, so you can see when the filter medium needs a backwash.

Have you not got a pool cleaner? There are heavy fines involved and a pool shut down if you are caught doing a botched DIY job.

The pressure gauge on our pool never even nears the red mark. However, when it gets to just below half way, our pool needs backwashing. Just looking at the pool tells me it needs a backwash as the flow of water coming out of the eyeballs becomes weaker.

Correct observation John. The other thing which lowers the flow is a dirty and blocked filter basket at the pump.
