Paphos Life

Just thought to leave the house for an hour while the washing is on and took my camera in case I see a snake, but what I discovered was much more
exiting:

Jungle of flowers everywhere



and when I went in the bushes there were the last orchids of this season

Lucky you. I've taken loads of photos of spring flowers, as I do every year, but I haven't seen any orchids this year

I did see a lovely long black snake cross the road just in front of my car on Sunday though, had to brake hard to miss it. I had my camera on me, but wasn't quick enough to get a photo sadly.

Indeed it is. I am trying to see if I can do a sneek preview, as it is just down the road from us. I have already seen a trail of primary school kids being led to it.

There's a banner in Polemi and Stroumbi giving the details and, disgracefully, they have spelt Tulip as Toulip.

HIC - think there was one criticism a couple of tears ago that made it into the press, but I went last year and it was fine. The only challenge is parking which there isn't a lot of control over in a small area like this.

Not really disgraceful. In Greek it is spelt as τουλίπα, so a logical mistake and still easy to understand.

It all depends on your expectations Lloyd? Polemi is a village of not much more than 1000 persons, you can't expect Kato Paphos organisation from the organising doctor who has a full time job at the general and a few school teachers and their children. The format is almost the same every year, if you go, enjoy it for the simple village event it is. The tulips that are quite exceptional. Don't forget it is free.

The event is at the Old Metochi tavern. At the end of the event everyone goes to "the fenced off bit" to view the tulips. The fence was erected last year to stop people (mainly Cypriots) from stealing all the the tulips overnight to sell in Limassol and Paphos. Unfortunately some people will climb the fence anyway and the only way to stop it would be an armed 24 hour a day guard.

Not at all. The sign next to the banner in Polemi spells it correctly. As I understand it there are a lot of English involved in preserving the Tulips so the proof can be easily checked before printing. And finally there is a clear reluctance to proof check signs, banners, vehicle signwriting etc over here as can be seen by observing the absurd number of errors. There are very few menus in restaurants that don't have obvious and easily spotted spelling errors.

Words fail me! The anglicised spelling of the Greek name τουλίπα is toulipa. There is no 'u' sound in Greek - it is sounded using 'ou'. So it is a perfectly understandable translation even if it is spelt differently some where else. If we get critical to this level it will eventually lead to the end of the quirkiness and the beauty of Cyprus. I love it that toast is spelt as 'tost' on the menus!
