It has just been on the UK news Sterling Moss has passed away at the age of 90.

Yes, I remember StirIng Moss. I was a child then, but my father was interested in motor racing.Stirling Moss was very popular as well as successful. He and another man Mike Hawthorne were great rivals and both gentlemen. Unfortunately Mike Hawthorne was killed. It was a far more dangerous sport then.

He would surely have been a World Champion had he driven for any other team than Mercedes. Juan Fangio was the lead driver so he had to win. Having said that Fangio was a World Champion driver and the story goes that after each race the gearboxes were stripped down to check parts and in most cases Fangio's box was just reassembled, Given the engineering and the great use of the box that said something. Things were a bit different from the computer game driving of today's F1.

Yes, you are right about Mike Hawthorne’s death, it was in a car crash on a road (called locally) the road over the Hogs Back which runs between Guildford and Farnham, Surrey.
He was a local hero running a garage called the Tourist Trophy Garage, if my memory is correct, Everyone was absolutely shocked by his untimely demise. I think motor racing must have been more fun then as it was between amateurs, I think. Though the cars were much more dangerous and had open cockpits, so crashes were usually horrible if a car turned over

I watched a great youtube of a documentary on Jim Clark and it really lets you see what things were like in that era. Hadn’t realised that Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark and Graham Hill were so close... it was an era of gentlemen.
