People in the UK are being advised if they are infected to keep their cats indoors where possible, they do not pass the virus on directly.

But if an infected person sneazes on them, and an uninflected person strokes their fur, the virus could be transmitted, the same goes for dogs.

Keep your dogs on a lead when walking....please.

A tiger has got the virus in a New York zoo, i can see how stroking a pet could pass the virus, but I doubt this was the case with the tiger

Mark your heading is totally misleading as usual the press in the UK has put their usual spin on it
If the owner has covid-19 and stroke their pet it could be carried on their coat if somebody else then strokes the animal
The BVA has issued a statement after this misleading announcement by the BBC that animals can transmit virus

People are all ready dumping their pets in already over run rescue centres who are struggling financially during this pandemic as they unable to operate charity shops or do fundraising..........

Obviously sounds like fake news being spread by some individuals.The situation this members mentioned is highly unlikely to happen, more rumour mongering.

There is far too much coverage of the Covid pandemic by the BBC in my opinion. They seem to go on and on about it for hours and hours each day.... I usually turn the TV off and play music instead.

Why is it highly unlikely? People have a tendency to stroke cats, and dogs often run up to people to say hello. Given that people are supposed to be socially isolating it seems perfectly reasonable to me to keep your dog on a lead under such circumstances.

I don't agree with the wording on the heading but of course IF people read further than that it is probably correct.

My main concern is the big IF - if people read the rest of the article and not just the headline. There are already thousands of animals being abandoned or surrendered to shelters because of this type of misleading reporting by the press. So sad and so unnecessary

Yes, it should be clarified. There is no evidence that pets can catch the virus themselves. They only act as a surface. So if a cat is cuddled by somebody with the virus, the cat will not be carrying the virus for the next two weeks. It may be in its fur, but the virus will die just as quickly as if it was on a tin of beans in a supermarket that had been touched by an infected person.

The virus or try and keep my cats IN? Difficult question.

I was having a chat on line with a local Veterinarian he said it was almost impossible for this to happen, not being a vet so I believe him rather than someone just trying to wind folks up. as posted this is vindictive animale haters, animals have a tough enough time on Cyprus as it is, leave them alone.

Have you tried wearing disposable gloves, Lincoln? I prefer to believe what Vets think. As Jim said this is a horrid way of potentially victimising animals who are innocent.Every time you go outside there is potential to touch something which has been touched by others. But disposable gloves, hand gels and washing hands frequently in hot soapy water. Should do the trick and remove the virus.

Dominic, I wasn't talking about you! What II am concerned about is that some people are highly impressionable. The last thing that the overworked animal charities want is for pet owners to abandon their pets.
It would be better if this pointless topic were given a rest.
Where animals are concerned good hygiene by their handlers/ owners is always very important.
No one needs to stroke or touch an animal who doesn’t belong to them.

It made me laugh too!

There was a Reuters article that said cats can catch the virus but dogs are not susceptible to it. This came from Vetinarians in the States.
I'm not particularly fond of cats or dogs but would never dream of hurting or harming them.

As I have stated before. I wear Gloves and a Mask. No need for your lectures. I love animals always have and always will. I am now protecting myself and all those around me. When I get home from my walk. I immediately wash my hands with the gloves on. Then wash my hands without the gloves. Then wipe all the door handles that I may have touched.

Out of idle curiosity, why did you like her post if you think she was lecturing you?

All started with an article in the Daily Mail I understand.

Apparently the tiger caught it from it's keeper at the zoo, how ? Either he was stroking it, and/or he was near enough to it to breath on it. So man is the dangerous one, not the tiger, ironic.
