On another note my wife's sister saw a Cypriot with a trolley full of hand gel in Alpha last saturday

That might of course be a public enterprise where hand wash is a necessity, such as a nursing home, hospital, kindegarten or school.

Hand gel would have been provided by the institution that needed it I would have thought, rather than send someone to a supermarket to stock up, that said, you can't beat good old soap and water.
