Shocker! Sanctions against Russia for the Crimean invasion should be de facto!

That does not make it right. Disinterest can be a virtue.

It’s obvious that the Cypriot Govt doesn’t want to upset the Russians who have many irons in the fire here.
That they want to get more support in their perennial quest to spike Turkey’s guns if they can. Should be no surprise either. Whether the EU wants to get involved in the perpetual scheming by Nicosia against the Turks is another matter.

The problem of borrowing money from someone is that it often comes with ‘strings’ attached which may at some point cause unexpected consequences.
Where Brexit is concerned there seem to be divided opinions here and in the UK about the benefits vs the consequences of what may or may not be be a good deal, as so much remains to be done by our Govt, even though we we are leaving the EU in a few days. We all hope that the details especially of the UK’s trade agreements with the rest of the world will all be in place by the end of this year....
At the moment we are at the stage nationally of hoping for the best!

You can put any slant you want on the occupation of the Crimea but at the end of the day that's what it is, an occupation.
Only 22% of the population voted in the referendum and they were overwhelmingly ethnic Russians.
Russia has changed the demographics of all the ex Soviet States by sending ethnic Russians to live and work in these countries and then stirred up ethnic tensions with the locals using special forces. Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and the Baltic States to name a few.
They're in Syria supporting the "government" and critising the West for supporting the Rebels while at the same time have special forces in Lybia supporting the Rebels.

One thing that JimB and most present day political commentators conveniently do not mention is that the Crimean peninsula was part of Russia from 1921 up until 1954 when Kruschev gave it to Ukraine even though it was populated by an ethnic Russian majority. (This did not really matter at the time as both Russia and Ukraine were part of the Soviet Union). Things have changed since then but the anti-Russian propaganda machine in the West perpetuates in the media.

Just like you conveniently forgot to mention he Crimea was originally settled by the Crimean Taters who were exiled to Central Asia and their lands given to Russians to change the Demographics. It's not anti Russian propaganda, it's a matter of fact.
In my wife's home country 46% of the population was etnic Russians at independence, it was the same in most of the other Soviet States which were basically just colonies of the Russian Empire.
