I think the Cypriots will come to regret their decision not to interfere in the hearing in Famagusta. Even if the Judge decides not to send her to prison or fine her, she will still be a convicted person which has other consequences when in the future she may travel elsewhere. The US do not allow convicted persons to enter their country for example.
To keep her in a room for about 8 hours without a Lawyer present "stinks" then wore her down until she made a withdrawal statement that was not written by an English person would not happen or be allowed in the UK.

Most free country's, do not get involved in court cases,,, its called Democracy, its ridiculous to ask for a government, of any country to get involved

Well, the other thread was just going on and on.
The whole saga of this poor girl has taken a turn for the worse, I suspect that this isn’t the first time that rough ‘justice’ has been inflicted on foreigners by the police and judiciary in Cyprus, Mostly, this has probably gone unnoticed as before Cyprus joined the EU this sort of thing could and did happen to the occasional Brit. So this may be just a forerunner of what may happen to any Brit who falls foul of the law once Brexit has completed.
How safe would it be to go to the police to report anything, not knowing how they would react?
There is a certain amount of unease and demonstrations are taking place in the UK about the way this poor girl has been treated. Whatever people like WHL and a few others nay think it isn’t good tourist publicity for the island at a time when people often think about booking their holidays,

I notice the use of the teerm "poor girl " in a court of law she has been found guilty , people oare making their own judgements on this case , without knowing the facts , The Judge was aware of the various facts and made a judgement , you might nit like hos decisions but he was aware of the facts you are not so please keep your descriptions of the girl to yoursleves

Please stop laying into me about my posts on this sad affair which concerns the way that a silly young girl who was unwise enough to apparently agree to sex with someone she met in a bar in Agia Napa has been treated. In no way do I condone her behaviour, but I think that in her case her attempt to report what turned into an alleged gang rape to the police has gone horribly wrong.
My comments on this case are specific to this and are not a reflection of my attitude to living in Cyprus where I have lived happily for the last 20 years. In that time there has been
Scope to learn and to like many things about the island and its people. Now a days it has turned into a multi racial society. I deeply resent your nasty and completely untrue remarks about me. I am grateful for the other members comments that I am trying to produce sensible and balanced posts on this forum.

For what it's worth, Dee, I think you can be overly critical of Cyprus at times, and WHL I think you can be overly defensive. Perhaps this is why the two of you rub each other up the wrong way so much?

But you WHL seem to think just because this girl has a modern attitude to sex, rather than your Mary Whitehouse ideas, she deserves the dreadful treatment she has recieved(7 hours grilling without a lawyer, 4 months in prison for a misdemeanor etc)

I don't think anyone on here is interested in my sexual views, but I am a million miles from Mary Whitehouses thinking. It really doesn't add much to the debate throwing things like that in, I usually enjoy reading your posts for what it's worth.

I would say that people are a lot less promiscuous now than they were in the sixties. Then the pill brought liberation. The diseases followed afterwards and put a dampener on it.

I think the difference is that these days it is more out in the open. It always went on though.

Going off on a slight tangent, the thing that frightens me most about modern attitudes towards sex, is how many British women have reported that their partners tried to do something to them they didn't want. Some 30% had experienced this, brought on I think, by the normalisation of casual violence towards women in modern day - readily available - hard core porn. That is an appalling statistic, and every man who has ever done anything like that should hang their head in shame and grow the hell up.

I think to be critical of Cyprus and its people has its limits. When you decided to stay for good here, like me since 1971 after spending 2 holidays at Kyrenia area, you have to accept that there are things different than in an perfect world. (where is this place?) In all this years many things happened to me, which were not nice, but I would not make it public to social media, because I feel Cyprus is my home country where I want to be buried. Many posts here, but from only a few people, upset me, when it is only critical about Cyprus. Some posters think they know something about the place because they live here 20 years or so, but in reality they get their information from a really poor, cheap press or from other expats unhappy here or already back in their home country. This includes also a lot of fake news which are nowadays easy to produce...
I can understand the comments from WHL if he feels the same like me, that Cyprus is his home now and don't accept permanent moaning about it.
One can complain about the rubbish dumped around the villages and along the roads, but it is much much better already than 40 years ago when even the Paphos town rubbish collection cars were dumping the stuff next to the Turtle Beach in Akamas. There are recycling places installed in many villages and looked after.
There is a hunting season, yes, I don't like it, but the same is also in many EU countries as well and also this is getting better specially by removing the lime stick and net trapping of birds.
Our roads in the countrysides improved significant from dirt tracks and you needed 4x4, to concrete roads now and if the motorway towards Polis is ready everyone will see the advantages. Reduced numbers of eagles etc are not because they are disturbed by road works but luck of food they could find in the past near the village dumps. I saw hundreds of them in the 80' when I toured through Paphos/Limassol villages.
Sometimes it is necessary to continue with tourist projects, like new high class hotels, even when the area is from archaeological interest, to change the Paphos tourism from cheap "all inclusive", into a high class one and protect the ancient site in the same moment, as there will be enough money available to do so.
Most of the houses, apartments, and hotels in Kato Paphos were built on top of caves etc in the past without any question, but now it is a big story mainly political parties try to get attention. (Greens, Communists)

So this could go on and on....

The biggest disadvantage IMO in Cyprus is still the very poor and slow legal system which did not change unfortunately in the last 30 years or so. I am plaintiff in 3 cases since 1994 and beside my Nicosia Lawyer died in the meantime they are adjourned every six month and two lawyers can't do nothing about it..
