Tax assessment

My wife received her tax assessment recently for 2013 . It showed 8€ owed for defensive tax , so yesterday we went to the tax office to pay . We were told you don’t have to pay amounts under 30€ ?
I wonder why they sent this bill recorded delivery ?

I thought that if you DID owe defence tax, then it was taken out of your bank account..

Yes, I've paid Defence Tax from my bank Account before now. However, I did owe €8 Income Tax and the lady behind the counter in the Tax Office told me to have a nice Keo with it as they didn't collect less than €10, so I did!
