After years of waiting, Tala residents expressed their relief on Wednesday that a collapsing hillside development on the outskirts of the village is finally being demolished. So dangerous had the buildings become that a crucial access road to the village below the complex had to be closed to the great inconvenience of residents....

As A previous resident of Kamares I am really pleased that finally the demolition of that dangerous development has finally started! This saga which has gone on for a number of years was mainly due to the ability of certain people to circumvent the local planning authorities, since approval for the planning permission was given from Nicosla I understand, It should never have been granted as the hillside in question was well known locally as being inheritantly unstable. In fact after rain it was always a seasonal watercourse.

I’d like to pay tribute to the unstinting efforts made by the residents association of Kamares (KVHA) Committee and also to Areti Peirithdou, Mukhtar of Tala. I hope that the demolition work will go as quickly and smoothly as possible. So that the road can be rebuilt, re surfaced and reopened as soon as possible !

What I don't get about this building is the Surveyors. Surely they must have seen that this wasn't suitable? Somebody must have lost a chunk of money in building this, and they must have been advised by somebody.

It's not like Pissouri, where future events happened which caused the problem (if my understanding of that particular hot potato is correct). In this case it must have been clear from the start, as Kili01 states, that it was dangerous.

They are doing well! Next comes the tricky part removing the ugly structure below which helps presumably to stabilise the loose soil and rocks behind.. hopefully we won’t have much rain in the next few days,
Fingers crossed,
Dee

What you don’t see from the photos is the 100,s of lorry loads of concrete and reinforcing has has been put in behind the structure to ensure the dwellings behind are safe.

The drilling rig has been putting piles both behind and in front (see the photo) of the building. Hopefully they have gone down far enough to go through the slip plane!

Yes. they are getting much nearer now. It will be great when they have removed still more of the debris and can build the new access road to Kamares and to connect again with the road to Kili.

The brown line that you can see in front of the road is the reinforcement for a pile cap. This will join all of the lowere piles together and form a slab that will probably then be buried under the new road, so still a lot of shuttering and concreting to be done yet.

At the top of the slope you can see the reinforcement for a wall that I am guessing spans the piles put in up there.
